#ICECHIP had a successful deployment in NE Colorado May 23rd 🧊🌪⛈️ (personally saw a tornado before seeing any hail, but the rest of the team got the frozen stones)

Today was the last day at NOAA for hundreds of employees who took an early retirement offer. Collectively, an estimated 27,000 years of experience left the agency. It goes without saying they will be missed. Their decades of service is commendable & appreciated. m.youtube.com/watch?v=Si-R...

Not a strategic move prior to hurricanes season: "The NWS office in Houston will soon be without any permanent management staff: their meteorologist-in-charge, warning coordination meteorologist, science and operations officer, and electronics system analyst will all be retired by the end of April."

No SPS's from Memphis for anything sub-severe in their WFO tonight. Additionally, we won't be getting the normal trickle of info from the previous storms, expect to see info released in bulk. I'm exhausted from the coverage this week. I can't imagine how all you mets are feeling. Much love <3

Saved this yesterday. Still in awe.
A list of active warnings from GR2 from around the peak of activity on 4/2. It shows 27 different tornado warnings, 1 being a Tornado Emergency, 2 more being PDS, and an additional two being Observed.

In addition, there's a plethora of SVR warnings, including some with the Considerable tag.

Ok... I think we did good. I believe I issued over 100 y'all watches, and I heard there were over 230 tornado warnings for the day. Coverage was immaculate and we peaked at 288,000 viewers for severe weather, a new high for the mode.

Southern friends, if you’ve ever wondered what’s left behind after those huge piles of snow melt in our parking lots up here, I’m here to satisfy your dull curiosity. Where doe that gravel come from? We’re also left with giant potholes. Check the car-eaters at about 2 o’clock, almost out of frame.
A giant mess of gravel and litter left behind after a snow pile melted away in a parking lot. Nearly out of frame on the right side are two ridiculously large potholes.

Long day! Now that I’ve had some time to scroll, I’m glad to see there was a lot more real time analysis and reporting here on BSky for Friday’s event then I’ve seen in the past. Let’s keep that going and growing! Now to grab a glorified power nap before dealing with Saturday. #wxsky

Gotta give The Pitt credit, it's been a while since I've gone 'oh it's 3am wtf' because a show drew me in so much. As a Yinzer, I appreciate how the writers crammed in as many local references in as possible. The emotional gut punches hit hard. The acting is top-notch. Enjoying the hell out of it!

Connor absolutely rocked this. As a child, I remember my dad taking me to an overlook near Renovo that had a view of the Moshannon F4 damage path. Just a wide line cut through the forest, as if someone ran a razor blade. I give that experience credit for jumpstarting my fascination with weather.

Apropos of everything, I keep a very frequently (these days) updated list of internships/jobs across the wx-climate enterprise here: wx.erau.edu/about/opport.... Open to anyone, not just our students. I will start including higher-level positions than I normally do (normally focus on entry-level).

One of my all time favorite lightning strikes. There’s probably some symbolism here but I’ll leave that for you to interpret. #wxsky #photographersunited
Two lightning bolts well over a mile tall pierce through the clouds and branch out in every direction. The one to the left is dimmer and much farther away. In center frame the main bolt splits halfway up and continues branching down to two landing points. The closer landing point on the left strikes the top of a perfectly vertical blade atop a wind turbing, and the farther one to its right strikes a span of power lines a couple miles away. Several of the poles on either side of the farther landing point glow as they arc over from the intense electric charge pumped into them by the bolt, and one of the poles has a leader to the ground bleeding off the excess energy. The lights of a town are visible in the distance off to the right, and mostly rural land with a few trees is illuminated by the lightning bolts across the frame.

Good breakdown from Elijah based on the text of the bill and the interview with the author on KFOR.

Jared King @thesilverhorse.bsky.social · 01/02/2025
Chasers: If you didn't catch the interview on KFOR, the bill's author specifically says that *yes* this is meant to get everyone who isn't working for an FCC-licensed media station, or directly involved with a university / research, off the road. It would be up to local law enforcement to enforce.

I've read through it a few times, and this is the conclusion I'm come to as well. $500 to make lightbars mean something, and be given license to enter any road closed by a OK government entity, with ways to remove said license if it's abused.
