Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 12hAfter the US paused support last year the other key European intelligence agencies put plans in place to step in if the US pulled support again. They can largely replace the US role but not entirely, it would still significantly damage the Ukranian war effort. 000
Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 12hUkraine is incredibly reliant on US intelligence support. The US briefly paused providing it before and the result was pretty devastating. It provides Ukraine with targeting information for strikes on military ans energy targets in Russia, the CIA has a team in Kyiv working directly with Ukranians. 100
Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 16hI know several women who practice witchcraft and lots of people like to think their dead loves ones are still with us in some way. They're the popular ones below because they're the ones some people really want to believe in. 000
Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 10/10/2026My Democrat voting American friends are all totally disinterested in what he's doing to the UK/Europe/Ukraine/anywhere but the US, to be honest. It doesn't register to them if it isn't domestic. Foreign news just barely has a presence there. 120

Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Lots of Americans across the political spectrum struggle to believe anyone non-white can be British and/or European (despite their own very well established non-white populations), so it barely even needs to be MAGAs, but it's definitely a US thingso.it 010

Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 08/10/2026I am reminded of the short film The Second Renaissance. A robot is scheduled for destruction and murders its owner. "Robot rights" activists secure it a court hearing and it's defence plea is that it didn't want to die. It does feel like that's where we are headed. 010
Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I haven't talked to my friends/acquaintances in the Greens but my main feeling is they read headlines rather than small print. They're not antisemitic but they're responsible for it anyway by virtue of letting it happen on their watch. 000

Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Any thoughts on if the worsening global situation might help Burnham by making rejoining the EU more popular? The promise of a GDP boost at a desperate economic time and greater security ties as the US becomes less reliable... 000
Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I'd say the situations going on in the UK and abroad right now generally advantage the three major parties. Whether Burnham is the one to come out on top of that is a different matter. 100

Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 05/10/2026So yes they manage to be generic and ultra specific at the same time. It's a great vehicle for getting a song into the charts that some listeners might dig into and learn from but it also means the basic messages resonate to people who don't try to make sense with the details 100
Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 05/10/2026They're one of my favourite bands! I just think a lot of their appeal comes down from the core lyrical themes of their songs are fairly simple anti-establishment stuff. It's peppered with a scattergun of other references most people will be oblivious to so all they hear is "take the power back" 100
Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 05/10/2026If you think the average US citizen knows who the EZLN then you have a much higher opinion of how well informed the public are than I do 110

Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I am familiar. I did my university dissertation on political protest songs of the 20th Century. They speed-run off the cuff errfences to stuff in a way the average person won't pick up on. 100
Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I think people who misunderstanding Springsteen and Creedence are people who barely pay attention to what they're singing along to whereas RATM I can kinda get, especially as their songs get play on mainstream rock radio without context 000
Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I don't think that comparison works. RATM's lyrics are mostly generic anti-authoritarian/anti-establishment songs which are fairly relatable to everyone and are often filled with references most people won't get. Born in the USA and Fortunate Son are very overtly about Vietnam. 410
Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 04/10/2026If you've not seen it, it's set halfway between seasons 2 and 3 of the main show. It's meant to have an 80s Saturday morning cartoon vibe to it. Anyone who enjoyed the main show will probably like it. 000

Rich @theramblingelf.bsky.social · 04/10/2026The impact of Osborne's cuts started to really bite a few years after Osborne left and should have brought the Torys down but Corbyn/Brexit allowed the party to play on easy mode for a few years and evolve into this non-serious party we have now 110
