The BBC is already giving Nigel Farage coverage for a speech he hasn’t even delivered. Report on what he says tomorrow, by all means. But previewing it now gives him free publicity and lets him set the agenda before anyone can scrutinise his words.

I am often asked by young teachers if I can recommend a programme for PSED in early years- as if it is something taught by a prescription 20 mins twice a week & not by building relationships & being emotionally available throughout routines of the day. Alarming loss of skills

UK public sector bodies spent £17bn with offshore-owned private equity firms last year. The same vultures received £31bn public sector contracts. Profiteering, low wages, tax dodging, asset-stripping is their business model. Enriched by public money. How many have politicians on payroll?

A cast iron drain pipe going down the side of a white-painted house. A crest of red feathers and a bright orange beak made from something solid have been attached around it. It looks remarkably like "Feathers McGraw", the evil criminal penguin from The Wrong Trousers.

When I left teaching for a short while I had a job that involved driving to clients in cities & towns nationwide - to navigate across new places I’d stop at a garage and look at a local A to Z & note down some directions then put it back on the shelf & drive on

I was actually taught Pythagoras practically in 3rd yr at secondary school Y9, by drawing a triangle & the squares on square paper and cutting up the squares to redistribute over the hypotenuse- probably the only bit of maths I ever understood compared to the memory approach at O’level

Little brains in particular (& big brains) need lots and lots of concrete experiences in different contexts & movement and actions are great representative steps towards the abstract concept. Even quadratic equations have lots of real examples; sports, design, business, to support learning

2/ and the younger the children the longer we need to use the concrete , experiential stages and representational and in more contexts.

I’ve always found Bruner’s CRA principles useful throughout my teaching career. Start with concrete and move forward to representation before teaching / talking solely in the abstract. It’s helpful also to go back to representational & literal practice also when abstract isn’t ‘sticking’.

Everything is about connections not just in our brains but in our bodies and our experiences too. Children learn to write when their bodies build the ability to manipulate a writing tool and they feel inspired to express themselves, not just when they learn the technicalities and remember the words.
