a rapist who was never prosecuted is statistically more likely to be a serial rapist than not. ⅔ of undetected rapists have raped more than once. the majority of undetected rapists have also committed other forms of interpersonal abuse including child sexual abuse. www.markwynn.com/sex-assault/...

how is it “making shit up” to point out that we only have one person’s version of events and the other could only dispute it if she is willing to risk incurring massive social cost to do it. that’s what’s typically known as a ‘fact’.

also very relevant to Cornell and conveniently left out of that guy’s statement: the reason the records are a matter of public record is because the university was investigated by the office of civil rights for systemic mishandling of sexual assault cases

loving this post-metoo development where if you don’t immediately take a rapist at his word you’re actually doing something evil. #BelieveRapists?

“she and I spoke the day after and agreed — I had assaulted her” is a specific characterisation and extremely self-flattering of events she may not agree with. sorry for not wanting to take a fucking rapist at his word about how his rape played out.

I’d argue placing the entire burden and responsibility for how Geller and people like him should be dealt with at a systemic level on their individual victims is not good or desirable.

this is not an apology, it’s a statement arguing that he’s a good person in part because he raped someone and listing exonerative factors to persuade people not to deplatform him. shocked more don’t see how manipulative this is.

Spent yesterday screening the first 6 eps of #TVL. This writing team keeps its narrative so tight that, season after season, it’s a masterclass on how to fit so much into compact space. I’m in awe; I dislike too much excess/distraction. No useless digressions here; every second pulls its weight.

On who Samira Mohan was in S1 of #ThePitt, who she became in S2, and why I was shocked to discover the show was writing her off when it felt like the finale was setting her and Robby up for a major arc in S3

About The Pitt’s Dr. Al-Hashimi Reveal …
The finale’s resolution to what’s been plaguing her is the culmination of a season that treated her as a mystery first and a character second.

People talk about “redemption” and “comebacks” for men who never faced real material consequences or, more importantly, actually stopped harming other people in the first place

I knew about some shitty people in the industry a decade before I had enough sources to publish anything. People come forward on their own time & getting informed consent every step of the way is key. Even with all that, it's stressful for sources. They don't need to do a damn thing. But they do.

90% of the stories I know about the entertainment industry have never been published. 90% of the talks I have with sources never end up in the published work. There is so much agonizing that goes into all of these conversations, the reporting, the fact, checking, the lawyering, I just don’t know man

I guess the only thing to do is to point you to this essay I wrote about the man in the industry who assaulted me and what happened after I reported him. This is the only sentence that really matters: “Could you imagine being autopsied while you’re still alive?” variety.com/2017/tv/colu...

No human being’s path to their own survival looks like anybody else else’s. Everyone who comes forward against a powerful abuser is setting off a bomb in their lives. I think a lot of armchair “experts” have not been in the trenches with survivors, or have not been a survivor, and it fucking shows.

it’s not necessarily that all these people in the epstein files participated in the raping of girls it’s that none of them cared and if he hadn’t been arrested and died they’d still be out there trying to be his friend

Sitting in his Lightstorm Entertainment museum at Manhattan Beach Studios, south of Hollywood, the director, writer, artist and explorer drolly rebutted the Icarus comparison, telling me that “the wings would have worked” if he had engineered them.

“I wouldn’t have used wax,” he said.

also fire & ash does have some structural issues that are kind of an unavoidable product of them splitting this huge story into two parts but I feel like if I view a double bill of way of water and fire & ash it will be almost structurally perfect with a little wobble at the changeover point

fire & ash was so interesting and I’m glad I have a week to think about it before everyone else goes to see it because I think there is a chance I land on this as the best one but I really don’t think that will be a common opinion

it’s not “too much plot” so much as “too many ideas” like this movie almost has Too Much to say, it could almost have been split in two again to give it more space to breathe, and I’m someone who already thought the first two had a much higher idea density than people ever give them credit for

kind of surprised again that james cameron invited us to evaluate fire & ash as a commentary on real-world events because there is stuff in that movie that is so inflammatory if you view it through that lens

This description of It's a Wonderful Life from Apple's store is technically accurate in every detail yet also somehow very funny.
George Bailey has so many problems he is thinking about ending it all - and it's Christmas! As the angels discuss George, we see his life in flashback. As George is about to jump from a bridge, he ends up rescuing his guardian angel, Clarence. Clarence then shows George waht his town would have looked like if it hadn't been for all of his good deeds over the years. Will Clarence be able to convince George to return to his family and forget suicide?
