The National Press Club condemns the Trump administration for barring NYT, WSJ and Bloomberg reporters from covering the G20: "Americans do not need a press corps chosen by the government. They need a free and independent press capable of holding the government accountable."
WASHINGTON, D.C., August 31, 2026 – National Press Club President Mark Schoeff Jr. issued the following statement today:

The National Press Club condemns the Treasury Department’s decision to bar journalists from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg News from covering the G20 finance ministers meeting in North Carolina.

Americans do not need a press corps chosen by the government. They need a free and independent press capable of holding the government accountable.

We call on the Treasury Department to immediately reverse these decisions, credential the affected journalists and explain publicly how and why they were excluded.

No administration should be allowed to handpick the press corps that scrutinizes it. The public’s right to know must come before any administration’s desire to control who gets to ask the questions.

This is not happening in isolation. We have seen a disturbing pattern of government officials restricting, reshaping or selectively controlling press access to the White House, the Pentagon and now a major international gathering. Each new restriction makes it easier for the next one to become routine.

When government officials decide which journalists may enter the room, they begin to control which questions get asked, whose scrutiny they face and what the public gets to see and hear.

That should alarm every American, regardless of politics. A free press exists so the public can know what its government is doing, question those who wield its power and hold them accountable.

2d Cir. upholds NYC's law prohibiting brokers' fees. Held: the law does not violate federal or state free speech rights, nor does it violate the contracts clause. ww3.ca2.uscourts.gov/decisions/OP...
On November 13, 2024, the New York City Council passed the Fairness in Apartment Rental Expenses Act, or the “FARE Act.” The Act prohibits brokers from imposing fees (known as a brokers’ fee) on tenants with respect to properties for which the broker has either (1) published a listing with the landlord’s permission or (2) agreed to work on behalf of the landlord. The Act also prohibits landlords from conditioning the rental of an apartment on a prospective tenant engaging an agent. Plaintiffs-Appellants, a group of trade associations, real estate brokerage firms, landlords, and other related organizations, sought a preliminary injunction to enjoin the law from going into effect, on the grounds that the law violated the United States Constitution and the Constitution of the State of New York. Defendants-Appellees, including the City of New York, opposed the preliminary injunction and moved to dismiss. The district court held oral argument on May 2, 2025, and on June 10, granted Defendants’ motion to dismiss in part and denied Plaintiffs’ motion for a preliminary injunction. We agree with the lower court’s decision and AFFIRM the judgment of the district court.

Are liberal communities more NIMBY than conservative ones? In new research, I examine how housing supply changed in US cities & counties from 2000–20. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... One key finding: Liberal places build *more* housing in their existing neighborhoods than do conservative ones.
City political ideology vs. percent change in housing supply. More conservative cities had higher housing growth overall from 2000 to 2020. But more liberal cities had higher growth in their already developed neighborhoods (those with at least 1000 units per square mile in 2000).Modeled effect of more liberal ideology on change in housing supply over two periods (2000–10 and 2010–20). In low-density neighborhoods (such as agricultural or natural areas), cities with more liberal residents had substantially lower growth than cities with more conservative residents. But those same liberal cities had substantially higher growth in higher-density neighborhoods.

The Kalshi Compliance Department established reasonable cause to believe that in November 2025, Moran was listed as a strike for the market "Who will run for public office this year?" Moran qualified as a direct decision maker for this contract and had direct influence on the outcome of the Underlying event. Moran placed ten orders in this market on November 13 and 14, 2025. Moran then announced himself as a candidate in the Democratic Primary election for U.S. Senator of Virginia on January 21, 2026. He was later added as a strike for the market "Virginia Democratic Senate nominee?" As a candidate, Moran qualified as a direct decision maker for this contract and had direct influence on the outcome of the Underlying event. The Compliance Department further found that, on January 27, 2026, Moran placed two trades in this market and then promoted the market generally on social media. All of this trading activity occurred in violation of Rule 5.17(z). The following day, during a phone call with Kalshi Compliance and Legal Departments, Moran acknowledged that these trades were improper and in violation of the Kalshi exchange rules. However, Moran repeatedly refused to resolve this matter via settlement and stopped responding to further correspondence from the Compliance Department.
The Compliance Department has issued a penalty suspending Moran from direct or indirect access to Kalshi for a period of 5 years and imposed a penalty of $6,229.30, plus disgorgement of any prof…

Pursuant to an offer of settlement in which Enriquez agreed to finally resolve this matter, on April 10, 2026, the Kalshi Disciplinary Panel approved a final settlement where Kalshi and Enriquez agreed that Enriquez violated Kalshi Rule 5.17(z). Enriquez announced himself as a candidate for public office and was added as a market option for a contract on the Texas Republican primary election for Texas's 21st Congressional District. As a candidate, Enriquez qualified as a direct decision maker for the contract and had direct influence on the outcome of the Underlying event. The settlement further established that Enriquez purchased less than $100 worth of contracts related to his own candidacy, in violation of Rule 5.17(z).
The settlement also established that Enriquez cooperated with the Compliance Department inquiry into this trading activity and agreed to finally resolve this matter by accepting the Compliance Department's conclusions, paying a financial penalty, and accepting a restriction from trading on the exchange.
Under the terms of the settlement, Kalshi suspended Enriquez from direct or indirect access to Kalshi for a period of 5 years and imposed a financial penalty of $784.20.
