I always thought it was bullshit how many movie characters seem to have Morse code memorized.

People: stop getting into car accidents on the freeway. I'm sick of having to sit in backed up traffic just because you stupid motherfuckers don't know how to properly change lanes at speed.

Digger has a sort of twist/framing story that's kind of interesting and re-contextualizes the rest of the movie in a way that helps it but... probably not enough to overcome the fact that the other 90 minutes of it are a loud and annoying and not really very funny sub-Don't Look Up satire.

There's nothing remotely new about this. In 2003 the "Pitchfork reader who's never heard of 3 Doors Down" was very much a thing. Not to mention the endless discourse of the era about HBO watchers being out of touch with the CBS watchers of the world.

Counterpoint: Maybe we don't need to give out spoilers for movies to appease people who lack the emotional maturity to know how fiction works.
Post: Has anybody written the piece about how movies like Heart of the Beast and Good Dog now have to pre-announce "It's ok, audiences, the dog doesn't die!" Huge cultural shift from just 10-15 yrs ago when audiences who--I promise--LOVED DOGS JUST AS MUCH were perfectly fine with Marley & Me or whatever?

Reply: You have no idea how angry some of us were after taking children to movies like My Girl (Dan Aykroyd, Macaulay Culkin)

Without any warning at all that a child dies at the end

A heads-up "trigger warning" in the reviews (if not advertising) about pets or children is a much-appreciated improvement

By my count I've seen 70 of these in their entirety, ~18 of them in part, and am only unfamiliar with about 12 of them and... the sheer number of hours I've dedicated to television is starting to dawn on me.

Was a little baffled by Primetime. The ethics of To Catch a Predator were highly questionable but Chris Hansen strikes me as a much more banal kind of evil than what we get from Pattinson here and I think the last thing we needed from this material was even more sensationalizeation.

The new Resident Evil is mostly a blast. Not a particularly meaningful movie, but as a sort of haunted house thrill ride its a ton of fun. Do take some issue with the ending though.

Not only did I meet Robert Kraft, I worked for him. His kid Jonathan asked me to “remove the black music” from my gameday playlist in ‘94 & I refused so they fired me. I was the cheerleader director at the time. I sued them for wrongful termination and won. So yes, I know that motherfucker.

This feels weird. Doesn't surprise me that the movie did really well but it doesn't feel like the country has Brand New Day fever or something. It just kind of feels like should be one more successful sequel to a successful movie but it's the biggest movie ever somehow.

It's funny that this fall we get new movies from Sian Heder, Peter Farrelly, Martin McDonagh, Taika Waititi, Aaron Sorkin, and Alejandro González Iñárritu. It's a convention of award season directors who drive FilmSky insane. If only someone had invited Adam McKay or Jacques Audiard to the party.

Truth be told I don't have a very interesting "where we're you on 9/11" story, neither do most people. I was watching TV while eating breakfast, then I went to middle school and it felt bad.

Hope is kind of frustrating. It has some exhilarating and exciting filmmaking but it's at times marred by some rather poor CGI creatures. It also ends on a major cliffhanger and if they don't end up making a sequel its going to feel extremely incomplete. Still liked it, but it could have been more

The unintended consequences of this movie continue to ripple...
Screenshot of The Guardian headline: "The quaalude comeback: a once 'extinct' drug from the 70s makes a resurgence" subtitle "Underground chemists are now producing the notoriou party drug after a Scorsese film sparked renewed interest"“We eliminated the problem,” said former Drug Enforcement Administration diversion control head Gene Haislip. “We beat them.”

Then the 2013 movie Wolf of Wall Street plucked quaaludes from the annals of drug history and became a box office hit, making a new generation suddenly curious about the drug. It didn’t happen overnight, but now, thanks to niche underground chemists and exclusive drug concierges, quaaludes are back.

Without the film, “quaaludes would have disappeared into oblivion”, says Jack Allocca, an honorary neuroscience fellow at the University of Melbourne and a drug pharmacology researcher. “It created such a hype around the drug. The people that are doing quaaludes are either connoisseur psychonauts, or they want to be ‘Wolf of Wall Street cool’.”“Everyone I first sold it to just knew it from the movie,” says the rapper, who did not wish to be named due to the illegality of selling quaaludes. “I’m glad it’s making a comeback. It really does help people connect.”

One regular consumer of quaaludes, who does not wish to be named because he manufactures psychedelic drugs, recalls his reaction was when he was first offered the drug at a party more than a year ago: “I was like, ‘Fuck yeah, dude.’ Because of Wolf of Wall Street, quaaludes have this proper vibe to them. They’re these very classy, ancient, extinct drugs.”

His understanding is that several chemists, mostly along the west coast, started synthesizing them because the demand for them grew after the success of the Oscar-nominated Wolf of Wall Street, but that it may have taken time to procure the precursors and establish a supply chain. “I don’t think many people were really aware of quaaludes before Wolf of Wall Street came out,” he says. “I didn’t know about them.”

The Dog Stars is one of those frustrating movies that's actually pretty well made aside from some third act issues but just doesn't have the juice to really stand out or feel particularly noteworthy. I guess it's still "good" on balance but not good enough for most people to care.

Checked out FilmSky's big cause célèbre "Coyote Vs. Acme" and it's legit a funny and charming and surprisingly ambitious comedy with a nicely (and ironically) skeptical view of corporate power. Very worth seeing beyond sticking it to WB.

The End of Oak Street: kinda fun but nothing wildly special. It's as good at ripping off Spielberg's aesthetics as anyone, doesn't deepen themes though. Would have liked to see more interaction between the people of Oak Street through all this, the central family seems alone mostly. Bad epilogue.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is a lot more comedic than I Saw the TV Glow and hits differently. I definitely don't love it like I did that movie but it kind of doesn't ask you to. Beneath it all is some pretty complicated psychosexual dynamics that will require digesting.

Apparently Diane Warren has songs in two different pathetic looking movies with songs this year, not sure which one will be more irritating as an Oscar nominee. The first appears to be a car commercial masquerading as a movie called Maserati: The Brothers, which is a horrible title. 🧵

We need to start being normal about bad movies. Its fine to not like certain movies and explain why you don't like them, but we need to retire this trend of talking as if a few bad films is the death of whatever genre, studio or franchise they're from, bad movies have always been a thing.

I certainly don't want anyone in Hollywood to make a sequel to The Odyssey, but if they do their best bet is to make an Agamemnon/Clytemnestra spinoff expanding on that situation modeled after Aeschylus' Oresteia Trilogy. Honestly someone should just make that even if it's not officially connected.

"annihilate" anyone who still sees him as the fat guy from Superbad

"If we got into it, I would f*ck you up. I would f*ck all three of you up"
"My favorite thing is people are like, 'Oh, Jonah Hill, f*cking fat guy from Superbad.' And I'm like, 'I would f*cking annihilate you, dude. I'm not kidding you. Try it. If you see me, try it, dude. Bring it. Who's got it?'"
