I have trouble distinguishing one or the other as more famous, but “I learned it by watching you” gets a lot more use, at least, amongst my friends

So folks like me who use neither of those except for the rare thing a friend personally shows me to watch not only doesn’t know of the song’s existence before today but doesn’t even know why I don’t know of it because I don’t know which way of consuming media I don’t use is its vector.

This angry Rolling Stone take says sooo much about the Rolling Stone writer’s utter failure to understand modern society and media consumption that it really should disqualify them from writing any more. This is the first I’d heard of the song even existing and know nothing about what it’s about.

Update 2: New Add-On Rewards are Here! · LIGHTSPEED & NIGHTMARE: Award-Winning SF, Fantasy, & Horror
Overnight, we surpassed 40% of our funding goal! Geting to that point has cleaned us out of most of the limited quantity rewards we had (including all 25 copies of LIGHTSPEED: YEAR ONE!), but good news: Today we've added a bunch more signed books and other goodies, including: LIGHTSPEED Issue #100: A physical copy of our landmark 100th issue. New signed books from Chuck Wendig, Daniel H. Wilson, Ken Liu, Paul Tremblay, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Stephen Graham Jones, Veronica Roth, and Victor LaValle. Signed two-book bundles from Olivie Blake, P. Djèlí Clark, and Seanan McGuire. Two more signed limited editions by Martha Wells: Witch King and Queen Demon. Plus, we found one more copy of the rare NIGHTMARE #1 in print. And lastly, we've moved our D&D experiences to the add-on menu. Bring some friends to play in a game alongside John Joseph Adams and/or play in a game DMed by JJA! If you've already backed, you can edit your pledge to add any of these new rewards. Thanks again so much to you all for the amazing amount of support.

Writing "wisdom" I hate: WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW. This is the worst advice ever. It would be better if it was KNOW MORE SO YOU CAN WRITE ABOUT IT. Every good writer I know is constantly researching and getting new information and asking experts. It's a terrible bit of advice!

Having been thinking about this and am finally rewatching it today and only more strongly believe it is “the one”. If I wanted to show someone one of these films and have the best odds of them loving it, I’d show them For A Few Dollars more.

Do you have any idea how many pictures a pro photographer takes in a shoot and how meticulously the creative side of some thing like a pro photo shoot combs through the results to get exactly what they want? even if cultural context was missing from the creators, some one eventually saw it who knew

So, about the Converse ad, I’m just going to point out that when people do something like this deliberately they are going to have the story to explain how it was a mistake already prepped and I frankly wouldn’t trust any stranger rushing into people’s mentions to explain it on behalf of the company

We recommend avoiding general and often dehumanizing "the" labels such as the poor, the mentally ill, the French, the disabled, the college-educated. Instead, use wording such as people with mental illnesses. And use these descriptions only when clearly relevant.

AP The Associated Press
Replying to @APStylebook

The use of "the French" in this tweet by @AP was inappropriate and has caused unintended offense. An updated tweet is upcoming.

2026 and we still have people with power equating people being rude and people being bigoted as "both bad" and accepting that "debating" the right of entire classes of humans to be considered human is acceptable speech.

I was today years old when I, a major fan of The Locked Tomb series first learned of the Edgar Allen Poe poem "Annabel Lee" and I can't believe I hadn't before. Now my question is...how much (if any, of course) was the poem an inspiration for so much of the whole thing.

Watching “Marlon James in Conversation” on Criterion Channel & when he says that in his class “there is no place for ‘this is a good book; this is a bad book’” because “it is lazy criticism” and “there are so much more important things to talk about than how much better this is from that”. Love it!

Was the dinner scene tasteful? Did it further the plot? Did the detectives have to discuss the serial killer while quaffing down beers? Was the hotdog necessary? Not sure I wanted to see the topping fall off the pizza. All this gratuitous eating in fiction...we could just suggest alimentation.

I recognize the pain of thinking if I could only talk to them one more time.
A chat request from a late friend
I recognize the pain of thinking if I could only talk to them one more time. It is among the more familiar human laments. But that's just the thing it is a human emotion not a technological problem. Our capacity for loss – in fact the necessity of losing and having lost – is what makes us who we are. There is no workaround. There will be no workaround. And every attempted step toward preventing that or perverting that is an affront to our humanity. Why not just taxidermy nana and prop her up at the Texas Chainsaw Massacre dinner table? At least there's something real and tangible about that. An undeniable sacrilege. You should have to smell the dead when you disinter them.

Really liked Lanterns tonight but I’m slightly annoyed that there was a straight up confession of identity given based on an early conversation and they didn’t have Stewart pick up on if explicitly apparently? Hoping next episode he admits it was more than just his gut and he did catch it.

Hate that he did this, definitely don’t want to see it but I also am starting to think part of the urge to do this comes from a personal pet peeve of mine: the complaints that come when things in books and film fail at being 100% perfectly accurate in all things and the drive to avoid that.

Ok, I loved the Odyssey. want to go see it again. I think the general public caring about how much money a movie makes is stupid. That said. Is this number inflation adjusted? Does it take into consideration the extra cost of Imax tickets which I assume it has a much higher share of than most films?

When I first heard the ADHD-gatherer thing it made so much sense to me because I think this translates well to the modern world of being good at "google-fu" which is basically my one great superpower. Scouring various digital resources & the internet quickly to learn how-to do X or why Y? On it!

I've seen folks talk about ADHD as a neurotype that's well-adapted for hunter-gatherer societies (yes), but given how much ADHD in the public consciousness is male-coded, and how much people think of "hunting" as masculine, I think they miss the obvious: It's not hunter brain, but gatherer brain.

Would apply only to married couples? So this sounds like a continued plan to punish women who don't conform to the Christian Nationalist's ideas of traditional "values" of being oppressed in general and subservient to men in specific.
