I Play Rocky or Michael getting nominations would be an eyeroll inducing and seem plausible at the moment (granted I haven't seen either). Lots of other movies in the mix like Wild Horse Nine, La Bola Negra and The Debut which I may or may not like but they may crowd out cooler options.

Not feeling to great about the Oscars this year. They've been pretty good recently so we're probably overdue for some fuckshit and they seem to have a lot of bad options in their orbit this year.

The cultural trends of the middle aged are one of the more overlooked aspects of most "retro" depictions of the past.

I always thought it was bullshit how many movie characters seem to have Morse code memorized.

Insomuch as this exists it's likely part of the shift towards "affordability" as a buzzword and trying to find ways to sell these policies as things that will help "you" (whoever you are) rather than some nebulous "the poor."

Iñárritu has kind of a history of being weird about critics, but to be fair critics have kind of a history of being weird about him.

This Rufo dude must talk a hell of a game behind the scenes in person or something because the number of seemingly smart people he's buffaloed into thinking he's something other than a well dressed KKK member is mystifying.

Not really, something like 90 of its 129 minutes are exactly what's in the trailer, and the other thirty minutes are deconstructing that kind of thing a little but not in entirely critical ways.

People: stop getting into car accidents on the freeway. I'm sick of having to sit in backed up traffic just because you stupid motherfuckers don't know how to properly change lanes at speed.

Digger has a sort of twist/framing story that's kind of interesting and re-contextualizes the rest of the movie in a way that helps it but... probably not enough to overcome the fact that the other 90 minutes of it are a loud and annoying and not really very funny sub-Don't Look Up satire.

These robotaxis exist for one and only one reason: to put human taxis and rideshare drivers out of work. These things benefit nobody except the businesses building them. Why you're wiling to help drive human workers to the unemployment line faster is baffling.

IDK, sending some of this stuff like Elio to Netflix could serve to increase their audience and thus their future value. There's a reason they aren't sending their marquee properties.

They just thought they'd be able to do the stunt quick, everyone would just be confused, and they'd move on before anyone got to the bottom of it. They'd have their gotcha clip for the base and the ensuing fact check would get lost in the news cycle.

There's a Bosnia sized hole in this argument. People were convicted of genocide in Bosnia for killing "just" 8000 people and for the forced removal of "just" 25-30K people. There were almost certainly more births than deaths in Bosnia during that conflict.

I'm sure it goes back way further than that. Ask the average hardcore jazz fan in 1959 who Frankie Avalon was and they'd probably say "who?"

There's nothing remotely new about this. In 2003 the "Pitchfork reader who's never heard of 3 Doors Down" was very much a thing. Not to mention the endless discourse of the era about HBO watchers being out of touch with the CBS watchers of the world.

Yes, the song is actually on Tennessee's side in the country civil war... but that state's also regressive so it's kind of a wash.

Walt Disney actually HATED the new technology he used to make movies post 1950. He still used it because it cut costs and saved him money but it produced noticeably worse looking movies than the hand-drawn stuff from the 30s and 40s and he knew exactly how much he was degrading his art.
We found our way forward in an unexpected place: Walt himself. The Disney archives held astonishing recordings of Walt explaining his creative process. His own writings. His notes and storyboards. Work product captured at every stage of his process. This was truly a gift. Listening, reading, sitting with the work itself, we heard him talk about character, about emotion, about how an audience feels when a character truly comes alive. He talked about making bold choices and refining a scene until it genuinely moved people. We didn't hear a word about pencils or paintbrushes. In fact, Walt was famous for being a technologist, forever hunting for state-of-the-art tools, often inventing them himself to achieve the images he saw in his head. But he never defined animation by the tools. He defined it by whether the audience believed the character. His principles were timeless. The tools were not.

They don't necessarily know you haven't arrived yet. You could have come early to and may be killing time elsewhere and may want to come to the meeting spot earlier.

I feel like it's a measure of time as much as anything. A meltdown feels like something with permanent consequences while a tantrum feels like something that lasts a couple hours, but a crashout feels more like something that wrecks your week but then you come back from it.

Counterpoint: Maybe we don't need to give out spoilers for movies to appease people who lack the emotional maturity to know how fiction works.
Post: Has anybody written the piece about how movies like Heart of the Beast and Good Dog now have to pre-announce "It's ok, audiences, the dog doesn't die!" Huge cultural shift from just 10-15 yrs ago when audiences who--I promise--LOVED DOGS JUST AS MUCH were perfectly fine with Marley & Me or whatever?

Reply: You have no idea how angry some of us were after taking children to movies like My Girl (Dan Aykroyd, Macaulay Culkin)

Without any warning at all that a child dies at the end

A heads-up "trigger warning" in the reviews (if not advertising) about pets or children is a much-appreciated improvement

Was a little baffled by Primetime. The ethics of To Catch a Predator were highly questionable but Chris Hansen strikes me as a much more banal kind of evil than what we get from Pattinson here and I think the last thing we needed from this material was even more sensationalizeation.

Lol. Amateurs.
Instead of defusing the situation, the apology seemed to make things worse. The bar had erred: it posted an Instagram card without providing alt-text for the visually impaired. This set off a fresh round of accusations of ableism.

A non-trivial number of Gen X white people only learned about black culture from 90s rap music and that had a lot of f-slurs in it.

He sold his integrity for this?
Shots barely fit together as the film goes on, with anything except isolated closeups of human faces not only suspect, but downright insulting to watch, as “Trees Are Watching” becomes a product of typed-in prompts rather than real, intelligent artistry. It shouldn’t be incumbent on viewers to have to wade through something so offensively produced and assembled. Alas, it isn’t the first time such a faux pas has been excused on an international festival stage, and it likely won’t be the last.
