Photos of my father-in-law's lovely & fairly typical neighbourhood in Warsaw [more info in alt text]. Lots of negative stereotypes out there about C/E European housing. My experience is estates across Warsaw & Poland more broadly are brilliant places to live, with lots of lessons for elsewhere.
People enjoy the evening sunshine in a leafy public court area between buildings in Sady Żoliborz housing estate in the north of Warsaw, Poland. A man walks his dog, a man cycles past, and children can be seen playing, including a small child learning to ride a bike. A sign to the left marks this as an entirely "Traffic Free" zone. Two older women sit chatting in the evening sunshine as a man walks his dog on a wide lane that runs between apartment blocks in Sady Żoliborz in northern Warsaw. White housing blocks with balconies can be seen to the left of the picture, behind large trees. Pink flowers grow out of a concrete planter at the front of the image. This path like the others nearby is entirely traffic free - car use is limited to peripheral streets, with 'inner' estate streets reserved for walking and cycling only. Not much going on here! But it's a snap of the apartment blocks in my father-in-law's neighbourhood. As you can see, every building faces out onto a public court, often with a mix of play areas or benches - and always surrounded by trees and greenery.Looking down a quiet path that leads to the car parking area near the outer edge of the estate. Car access is limited to peripheral streets only, meaning the inner estate is kept as a tranquil place for residents. Planters with large pink flowers line the path, and a white eight-storey apartment block rises behind the trees. A bed of wildflowers grows to the right of the image.

Even in latin america, which is the most similar region to us in terms of racial/ethnic diversity, casual stereotyping is—in my personal experience—much more pervasive (being called “chino” as an asian person, etc)

I love Larchmont Boulevard as much as the next Angelino but it would be even better if there were housing on top of those cute cafes and boutiques

My general thesis about American subways is generally they have too few branches to their trunks because tunneling is really expensive but our neighborhoods are super low density. So it’s really tough if you’re not “New Yawk” to corral enough people for a a viable tunnel.

Australia’s model of frequent suburban rail is pretty cool and Canadians should know more about it.

It’s so exhausting. I don’t like the centrist elements to the latest pitch but the refusal of the academic left to engage with the need for abundance has left a void for it to be paired with other politics. They will be left behind.

yeah i think the biggest failing right now is that civil society is not mobilized, Congressional minorities really can't do anything substantive, the just total collapse of american civil society is the scary thing

The NYC machine Dems are a cancer in Democratic politics - they gave us Adams, they’ve given us feckless, corrupt leaders, they lost us the House in 2022, and they’re losing their own state to Trump. Dumping them should be internal priority number one for the party

i think what's particularly demoralizing is that there is just no courage or principles behind the words of republicans who style themselves as serious conservative national security and constitutional thinkers, absolutely zero. its not surprising but my GOD these people are pathetic

We are in the middle of the most profound crisis of American government since the civil war and our idiotic political media can barely see it. Control of the US has been handed to a totally unelected oligarch whose politics are defined by close association with neo-Nazis and conspiracy theorists

The question to me is whether it's that WIRED is the only one getting this dirt, or it's that WIRED is the only one who dares publish it. The fact that these stories aren't being immediately vultured onto the New York Times front page with minimal or no attribution makes me suspect the latter

What I wish people would understand is that the Trump fanatics aren't really engaged in an ideological project. They're a mob made of the people who now dominate Twitter replies: men who derive deep psychological pleasure from imagining themselves as killers and torturers

The most disheartening part of all this is not a single one of our leaders is willing to tell the truth about the stakes. 1. We know the fires will get worse 2. We know insurers will be unable to offer coverage to people at risk of fires 3. The state is overexposed to risk due to the FAIR plan.

I remain firmly in support of my initial proposal when the fires were still exploding: the city, county, or state building 10x the number of units that burned in the fires on safer, more transit-centric land.
