Medieval Hunting Deaths: A Thread Hunting could be very dangerous (not just for animals) in the Middle Ages. Accidents happened and everyone from kings and earls to lowly peasants could be killed by a stray arrow, a hanging branch or a wild animal defending itself. 🧵7
A man in blue awkwardly holds a bow in front of him. He appears to have misfired the arrow, which is up near his face and facing the wrong way.

One reason to learn about things outside your major is so that you have something to talk about with people at parties and on dates. No amount of money will make up for you being a crushing bore. History majors learn this early but I guess it takes other people longer.

Song Lan sees a ghost. For #SongxiaoSeptember2026 week 4: horror AU. #SongLan #XiaoXingchen #Songxiao #MDZS #YiCity #MoDaoZuShi #魔道祖师 #宋晓 #horrorart
A digital illustration. It depicts a scene from a modern AU: Song Lan, with a buzzcut, a tank top and some sweatpants stands in front of a mirror; his reflection is looking at a figure that’s only there but not in the tangible world, of a smiling man (Xiao Xingchen) with a gape on his throat, and the places where his eyes used to be glowing in white; Song Lan is crouching to the sink, holding a bar of soap in his left hand; he’s illuminated by the selected light on the sink.

Women in a Crow Boat at New Year Sunrise. Ukiyo-e woodblock print. About 1800, Japan. Artist Utagawa Toyokuni I
Surging through churning, frothing waves, a fantastical pleasure boat anchored by a monumental, jet-black crow figurehead carves its path into the early morning light. Atop the horizon, the deep crimson orb of the first sunrise of the New Year (hatsuhinode) rises above low clouds and distant mountain peaks. Standing poised aboard the decorated hull, an elegant woman in a mauve, plum-blossom-patterned kimono holds aloft a shallow porcelain dish containing a potted New Year arrangement, while her companion in a coral-red shibori garment sits attentively at her side. The stark contrast between the crow’s light-absorbing black feathers, the crisp spray of white water, and the soft pastel robes creates a vivid sensory landscape, evoking the biting chill of an early morning sea breeze infused with the faint scent of salt and spring buds.
Designed around 1800 by master woodblock printmaker Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769–1825), this polychrome print (nishiki-e) fuses Edo-period bijinga (pictures of beautiful women) with auspicious New Year mythology and mitate (playful poetic allusion). The crow boat (karasu-bune) draws upon sacred Shinto lore—wherein the crow is venerated as a divine sun-messenger and guide—blended with the popular urban custom of gathering to witness the first sunrise (hatsuhinode) for health and good fortune. The potted plant held aloft, traditionally fukujusō (pheasant's eye) or dwarf pine, serves as a harbinger of wealth, resilience, and longevity. The intricate carving of the wave patterns and the flawless registration of delicate pigments reflect the peak of Edo-period monozukuri (artisanal mastery), requiring a seamless synthesis between artist, block-cutter, and printer.

However, rationalism does not *arise* from HPMOR as an originating soil. This is a large part of why I do not consider it a fannish religious movement or a fandom cult.

I don’t really know or care if yud is a “real” HP fan and it doesn’t matter. But he does appear to be a real rationalist or at least interested in advancing this for whatever reason. I am willing to conjecture that he could or would have used another similarly large fandom for the same purpose.

Fandom cults tend to prey on people via shared interests (typically entertainment media) rather than ostensible shared values. Often these can get abstract pretty fast (Snapewives) but the media is a primary recruiting mechanism.

Typically the amounts of money involved in these situations are not large, in the grand scheme. Rationalist fanfiction is not a fannish behavior for the sake of doing fandom, it is rationalism distributed via fannish channels and packaging.

Some of the fannish religious movements don’t really fall under what precisely @douglassfreestate.bsky.social is talking about (spawnism especially is a different kind of thing but that’s not relevant now). HPMOR is not the first instance of someone trying to leverage fandom to introduce a new
