it's hard to ignore the backdrop of 1920s jazz-age Paris in LAZARUS, though the music isn't a huge part of the story. Theres the merman's haunting melody in FISHWIFE too. The inherent homoeroticism of the sea shanty comes up in a far future WIP. #HorrorWritersChat

Who would foresee fragility to such a thing. Through the skin one can see the moon. A cold membrane like a caul. They come with the sound of leather. Wind whips under the wings. After all, are we not many, moving as one? Each pair of wings reflects an inner voice just as their pin eyes reflect starlight. Centuries of killing conjure a multitude of shapes within. To be contained to one form is to be human: to be vampyr is to contain a swarm.

Is the body not dense? Does it not writhe? Do they not move with batlike silence? Do their feet even touch the earth? Cut down one of the flock and another will arise in its place. You must stake it at the source, for each drop of the black river within such a creature will turn to smoke in your hands. A bat, a bug-eater, is easily felled, but there is strength in the pack. The vampire can assume the form of some terrible beast as easily as that of a man, for he is neither. He is a body spit back from the soil. He is disposessed even of Hell.

If Simon hadn’t been so desperate already, Hector really would bite him open, drink him half-dry and make him woozy and pliant. But Simon’s saucer-wide pupils and laser focus on the red pooling on Hector’s chin and seeping into his beard belie his composure. It’s not like Hector’s ever been turned—no doubt something out there could mold a vampire into something else, though he’d rather not dwell on the possibility—but he’s got the gist over the years, how it eats and eats and eats at someone if they don’t get what they need. Born vampires have it bad enough already; what exquisite agony something even worse must be, the basest parts of oneself parched and undeniable.

Gyula had lost his nerve, and he had not been back to this place for almost three years.
Gyula swallowed.

“You’re here for the meat?” came the voice. Strange, that Gyula could not place
his accent. He spoke the language perfectly but Gyula could tell he was not a native
speaker.
The other man cocked his head, his skull perfectly haloed by the buzzed crop
