I recommend people read this to get a sense of the president's grave cognitive impairment. Trump is either unwilling or unable (or maybe both) to answer the questions he's actually asked, so he just rants and raves while the interviewers do their best to provide structure to his random brain firings

Hey you, Europe, You know how we started a war without telling you, failed badly, and hurt all our economies? No, after we tariffed you, lectured you that Russia isn’t a threat, and demanded territory. Okay. So. Weaken yourself to rescue us or we’ll hurt our own economy more and you’ll be sorry.

And the SecDef’s priority is getting a bunch of subordinates together to lecture about how important lifting weights and tucking in your shirt is. Pathological!

These ads go in the same category as brazen, easily disproven lies after ICE killings. It’s not about persuasion. It’s a display of power. They could have passed them off as PAC-funded. They added “paid for by the U.S. government” because they want us to know they can break the law with impunity.

Frank Bruni makes the obvious but important point that Trump’s constant past, present, and future lying about how elections are rigged against him is bad for the polity and the culture: Evidence (or the lack thereof) is no match for Trump’s and his supporters’ persecution complexes. Under Trump, the U.S. went “who cares that these relationships are mutually beneficial, you need us, pay us tribute.” And in response, most countries are going “no, what we need are mutually beneficial relationships with reliable partners, and there’s a whole world out there, we’ll go elsewhere.”

I don’t think the president should be using taxpayer dollars to buy ads for himself. It’s illegal, undemocratic and wrong—stealing from the public and abusing state power to try to tilt an election in his party’s favor—which I think is bad, not good. Sorry to get so partisan, but that’s how I feel.

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

National security decision-making has a longer time horizon. It would be stupid for Canada, Europe, South Korea, etc. to act now based on assuming the US will be a reliable in a decade. We have shown that we are not. Many Americans still don’t appreciate how profound of a change that is.

The US already got a do over. A mulligan. A second chance. Much of the world, especially US allies, were ready to write off Trump’s first term as a fluke. The American people’s choice to put him back in power—as a convicted felon, after an openly bigoted, anti-democracy campaign—showed it was not.

I don't think it's possible for a president's party to be in worse position for a midterm. Virtually all polling and material factors against. With gerrymandering in the House and a GOP-friendly map in the Senate, it might not look like a historical wave. But still, negative referendum here we come.
