I've started using Wikitree because some egregiously incorrect information about an ancestor is getting constantly regurgitated onto Ancestry and Find a Grave, and am amazed at how attached people are to their completely wrong and unsourced trees. #genealogy

Two different patterned carpets meeting at an open wooden doorway. In the foreground, the carpet is a vibrant, textured pattern of swirling red, orange, and purple hues resembling abstract floral or marbled motifs. Beyond the threshold of the open double doors, the second carpet features an intricate, geometric interlocking Celtic knot or trellis pattern in shades of green, gold, and black.

This eyewitness account of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire always brings me to tears (read the whole thing trianglefire.ilr.cornell.edu/index.html)
As I looked up I saw a love affair in the midst of all the horror. A young man helped a girl to the window sill. Then he held her out, deliberately away from the building and let her drop. He seemed cool and calculating. He held out a second girl the same way and let her drop. Then he held out a third girl who did not resist. I noticed that. They were as unresisting as if he were helping them onto a streetcar instead of into eternity. Undoubtedly he saw that a terrible death awaited them in the flames, and his was only a terrible chivalry.
Then came the love amid the flames. He brought another girl to the window. Those of us who were looking saw her put her arms about him and kiss him. Then he held her out into space and dropped her. But quick as a flash he was on the window sill himself. His coat fluttered upward-the air filled his trouser legs. I could see that he wore tan shoes and hose. His hat remained on his head.
Thud-dead, thud-dead-together they went into eternity. I saw his face before they covered it. You could see in it that he was a real man. He had done his best.
We found out later that, in the room in which he stood, many girls were being burned to death by the flames and were screaming in an inferno of flame and heat. He chose the easiest way and was brave enough to even help the girl he loved to a quicker death, after she had given him a goodbye kiss. He leaped with an energy as if to arrive first in that mysterious land of eternity, but her thud-dead came first.

Last night I was dreaming that I was at one of Molise's best restaurants,Trattoria da Filomena. I was trying to decide between the chitarra al sugo and the cavatelli (both incredible) and my pulse quickened to such a degree that I woke up with a start. Minor electrical issue?
Restaurant table with tablecloth, bread basket, cutlery, glasses of water and a bottle of frizzante. The eye is immediately drawn to a plate of cavatelli pasta with a red sauce. On top is a generous glob of chilli sauce. It looks enticing, but wait! There's also a plate of spaghetti alla chitarra with a similar red sauce. Indecision sets in.

Relatedly, if you haven't been in an archives you have no idea just how much historical material is not online, not even a digital record of it. An LLM cannot research data it doesn't have. It can't even extrapolate where to find that material.

Many family history researchers try to prove links to nobility. But our less well-off ancestors can be even more interesting, if sometimes difficult to research. In Glasgow around the turn of the century, much attention was given to the plight of mothers living in slums. #genealogy

Most unhinged letter I've seen yet in my archival research😭 in YIVO's collection about the landsmanshaft mentioned in the letter. Undated.
New York, August 25th

Mr. Budofsky

With regard to our telephone conversation of last night, it occurs to me that you are probably still unaware of what prompted me to express the hope that I might soon have the pleasure of attending your funeral. Ignorance such as yours was not built in a day and I should not have expected it to be demolished in a night.

Therefore, in the hope that others might be spared the hurt and rage which you so witlessly inflicted upon me, my brother, and others, I will tell you precisely "what you did wrong."

1. During the family's important and very personal consultation with Rabbi Simon, you brusquely intruded yourself into this room of sorrow solely to instruct the Rabbi to be sure to "given mention" to the Chvonicker Aid Society when he spoke his eulogy. In short, you used the moments during which my mother was addressed to God as a vehicle for advertising your grubby little "Aid" society.

2. Again, at graveside, when Rabbi Simon stumbled over the pronunciation of "Chvonicker", you were there loud and clear to prompt him in behalf of your commercial. To you, the most important presence at the funeral was the Chronicker Society. To me, and to those others who cared for her, it was my mother. It is only to a man of enormous insensitivity that this should have to be pointed out.

Had I not been so astonished by your first intrusion, I would have countermanded your instructions to Rabbi Simon on the spot. But the past few days had been trying ones, and my mental reflexes were not what they ought to have been.

In retrospect, Mr. Budofsky, I have no more genuine personal interest in your funeral do care enough, however, about the that this letter will reform your Society. than you had in my mother's. I grief of strangers, to trust future ardors in behalf of your

Sincerely,

George Emmitt
