If nothing else, just read the opening paragraphs of the new @vevalenz.bsky.social piece. This sort of casual cruelty, and worse, is so common in U.S. jails/prisons that to most it barely registers as scandalous—but it is, and this reporting really matters: boltsmag.org/california-p...

Because it means acknowledging that a significant chunk Republicans can't be brought around or compromised with, and the pursuit of compromise and consensus is a central pillar of liberal politics.

I think this is happening across much of the developed world. We inherited expectations built during unusually favorable historical conditions and eventually started treating them as normal. The world changed faster than our expectations did. And because layman tend to explain outcomes through leaders and domestic policy we often overlook the larger structural change. wealth and productive capacity have spread enormously across the world. That doesn’t make local policy irrelevant but you can’t recreate the conditions of the postwar West through better policy alone.

this is 90% of the problem with AI messaging. a bunch of computer touchers were told they were the smartest boys and were compensated in a manner that reflected it. then a huge part of their job was replaced by a beep boop robot (because programming *is* 1s and 0s via language) and they went insane

"We're not going to bother trying to hold these people accountable because Republicans won't like it." communicates impotence. Y'all love to concede defeat in advance and pretend like its savvy.

progressive movements are judged by their shrillest, most extreme members. regressive movements are judged by their calmest, most mainstream members. this is simple journalistic balance.

I have a hard time believing Iraq could be anything other than imperialism, especially given how hard the government worked to fabricate a casus belli. "We don't want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud", Saddam is going to give The Terrorists chemical weapons, etc.

Imean, the US government has gotten in bed with many a legitimate monster, and neither OEF nor OIF had anything to do with the monstrousness of their respective regimes. OEF had a legitimate casus belli and made sense, at least initially.

Framing their anger as inherently wrong and rooted in bigotry is more than a little disingenuous.

Simple fact is, the creation and maintenence of Israel as a Jewish state has come at a disastrous and largely unfair cost to a lot of people, and even if you think thats a worthwhile price to pay (which I find abhorrent but not at all unreasonable)

And serve an explicitly Jewish ethnoreligious state, what do you expect? Is there any way for them to hate their oppressors that you wouldnt call antisemitic? All things being equal, If it was, say, Mormons instead of Jews, do you think Palestinians would hate Mormons any less?

I dont think the Nazi comparison works because in that case Jews were an oppressed minority who weren't actually hurting anyone or doing anything wrong, whereas here they're the dominating power. When the soldiers shooting at you and the planes bombing you with impunity wear the star of David

What use was it to bring the writer and activist Chanel Miller to campus in the spring just for fraternity brothers to scroll, bored, on their phones as she movingly shared her experience as Emily Doe, the victim of Brock Turner? As I wrote at the time, I was floored and dismayed as I sat in the audience with one of my brilliant undergraduates; we heard Miller’s shattering account of being sexually assaulted by Turner behind a dumpster at Stanford University after a fraternity party. Her talk was riveting, and there was so much to learn from it. And yet many of the male students who hailed predominantly from fraternities — 15 percent of each chapter was required to be in attendance — were so tuned out that Miller commented ruefully: “You know, this has been my hardest gig, because they didn’t turn down the house lights. I’m not sure how you professors do it, because it’s so hard looking out at this sea of mildly disgruntled faces. I mean, I’m sure you’re all very moved, but …,” Miller smiled. The implication being, it didn’t seem like it, from her angle.

We still, & probably never will be, ready for that conversation, bc criticizing Obama is the 3rd rail of Bluesky & 🇺🇸 politics. But it's one Democrats (& democrats) desperately need to have. If Dems do the same thing next time, we're just going to get the same disastrous economic & political results.

Lmao.
Leopold's and Loeb's families retained Clarence Darrow as lead counsel for their defense. Darrow's eight-hour summation at their sentencing hearing is noted for its influential criticism of capital punishment as retributive rather than transformative justice. Both men were sentenced to life imprisonment plus 99 years.

Republicans have been playing for keeps for a long time now, and the Democratic party writ large refuses to acknowledge that and instead keeps trying to negotiate and appease their way out of it.

He means winning as in "successfully advancing your partisan political goals", which is quite a bit different to simply winning elections. Putting any amount of Dems in office doesn't mean too much if they're to scared of offending Republican sensibilities to aggressively pursue their own goals.

I hope it's obvious to more and more of us as we defend the institutional rubble that was once the USA that "defending" it is not enough. The old institutions failed and/or were actively dismantled: simply pouring money and the right people into their shells is not going to end this nightmare.

If you think sacrificing trans people to bigots is a worthwhile trade to make, cool, you're allowed to believe that and I understand the math. Just have the integrity to say it with your whole chest instead of hiding behind vague accusations of perfectionism.

"Issue of choice", "perfect", "bespoke", etc is such a great way to dismiss something without actually engaging with it. Many Democrats have been clearly signalling that Trans people are negotiable to people who openly don't want them to exist.

As we talk about the fallacy that there's some middle ground on civil rights, that it's possible to fight fascism while also deciding which people we're allowed to abandon just a little bit, tactically, I keep coming back to the part of the Frank Wilhoit argument that doesn't get quoted:

I think the difference here is that Bhutan or Saudi are, for lack of a better term, "organic" ethnostates, whereas Israel was explicitly and consciously constructed as an ethnostate within living memory.

Now you all get its "alignment to whom" question. “Human values” becomes suspiciously similar to the values generated by a tiny Bay Area social network, filtered through Yudkowskian thought experiments, EA funding priorities and the commercial interests of frontier laboratories.

and an infinity of other things that have a nonzero chance of happening (and if you do you should find a therapist). This is clearly a very real Issue to you, and I'm telling you that the available evidence doesn't suggest any of this is worth worrying about, especially given *gestures broadly*.

St. Thiccolas @theblackadonis.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
There is a huge gulf between the vague "nonzero chance of x happening" and "stuff it is reasonable to be worried about". You don't walk around terrified about gamma ray bursts, the earth being obliterated by an asteroid, the Yellowstone Caldera going off, Al Qaeda setting off a nuke in your city

Great! You have a biotech company...which will still require a bunch of Ph.Ds who are cool with creating, testing, and distributing the "kill all humans" virus (and if you have the education to do that, you have the education to know what you're doing) in complete secrecy.

So...you create supervirus1 in order lower regulatory barriers so you can sneak through a vaccine that has supervirus2: supervirus harder hidden within. But that leaves us back at square 1: you still need a bunch of highly educated human beings with a lab to create, and distribute supervirus1.

Is nobody trialing these vaccines? Covid was an emergency, so it was fairly rushed out the door, but I was under the impression that normally a vaccine (or any medicine really) would require years of testing before it made it to the general public. No one will have noticed the hidden side effects?

St. Thiccolas @theblackadonis.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Also, even if AI designed a bioweapon, wouldn't you still need a fairly advanced laboratory and qualified scientists to make, test, and distribute it?
