In the 19th century, industrial chemists invented new synthetic pigments—chrome yellow, cobalt blue, emerald green. By the 1880s, Van Gogh seized their brilliance, swapping the browns of his peasant scenes for blazing color and fierce contrast.

In The Menaced Assassin (1927), Magritte draws on imagery associated with the 1913 Fantômas film and turns it into Surrealist theatre. Bowler-hatted men with a net and club flank a doorway, and the painting preserves its mystery rather than resolving it. #artbots #magritte

#ResistanceRoots Johnny Appleseed was born on this day in 1774 in Leominster, Province of Massachusetts Bay. He was a real person, and he planted a lot of apple trees, but he mainly sold them to make hard cider. He was also a pacifist, altruistic, revered nature and respected Indigenous tribes. /1
Johnny Appleseed. The romanticized image of Johnny Appleseed handing out sweet, shiny apples for children to bite into is a myth popularized much later. In the 1800s, the American frontier ran on alcohol. Water supplies weren’t safe to drink. Because fermenting killed off pathogens, hard cider became the primary daily beverage for entire families — even children. The average frontier settler drank 10.5 ounces of hard cider per day. Because Appleseed refused to graft trees due to his religious beliefs, his apples were genetically unpredictable, small and bitter. Known as “spitters” because you’d spit them out if you tried to eat them raw, these tart apples were perfect for pressing into hard cider. Resourceful frontier families used them for other staples as well, including apple butter, applesauce and livestock feed, and used a process called “freeze distillation” to make applejack. Note, however, that Appleseed rarely sold apples. He sold the young saplings and the land itself.

#ResistanceRoots Mary Hunter Austin was born on this day in 1868 in Carlinville, Ill. She was a writer, feminist, environmental conservationist and champion of Indigenous rights. Her life was shaped by the high desert landscapes she loved and battles over our most precious resource: water. /1
Mary Hunter Austin, by Charles F. Lummis, ca. 1900. Austin’s early writing is celebrated for its rich, mystical prose documenting the flora, fauna and Indigenous people of the high desert. Her environmental activism and Indigenous rights advocacy were driven by a mix of personal isolation, a lifelong rebellion against social conformity, and deep immersion in the landscapes and cultures of the American West. Rather than viewing issues in isolation, she developed a unified philosophy that rejected human dominance over both nature and women. Today, she is recognized as a pioneer of ecofeminism, nearly a century ahead of her time. Her later work explores how the exploitation of nature and the marginalization of women are rooted in the same societal power structures.

In today's newsletter I wrote about J.D. Vance's role in the death of Pierre Damas Bel, the 20 year-old Haitian refugee who took his own life in Springfield, Ohio. It's things like this which make me wish there was, in fact, a god who punishes evil. www.cupofcoffeenews.com/cup-of-coffe...
People like J.D. Vance, his political allies and supporters, and the media apparatus that protects him routinely espouse the idea, sometimes explicitly but always implicitly, that all immigrants are accountable for the actions of one criminal in their midst. But people like Vance are never held accountable for their explicit words and actions or the foreseeable, tragic outcomes they cause. For this reason I expect nothing to happen to Vance over this or any other action he takes. I expect him to remain in office, and even if he is never elected to a public position again, I expect him to grow even wealthier and more influential than he is today. Like Henry Kissinger and Dick Cheney, Vance is far more likely to die in a comfortable bed at an advanced age than he is to face the justice he deserves for his crimes. Our system has proven itself unwilling and incapable of holding the powerful to account and I don't expect it to make an exception for him.

But make no mistake: J.D. Vance killed Pierre Damas Bel. He killed him every bit as effectively as he would have if he had been driving the truck that ran him over. He killed him every bit as much as he would have if he had pointed a gun at his head and pulled the trigger. People have died because Vance rightly assumed he could get away with saying anything, no matter how disgustingly untrue it was, because his targets were vulnerable Black immigrants whom very few if any powerful people or institutions ever go out of their way to defend or protect.

If there is a Hell, Vance deserves to burn in it. If there is not, he should be forever remembered as the craven, monstrous bastard that he is.
