Fort St. John is a terrible city to get around without a car. Oh, you want to walk somewhere? Screw you.

A disappointing start for Victoria's latest bike share attempt. With just over 2 rides per bike per day, we're well below the average of 5.1 rides per day per bike for docked bike shares. We're also below the 3 rides per day per bike that dockless systems average.

I'm convinced that anyone who argues against cycling infrastructure by claiming blue collar workers can't cycle just hasn't been around many blue collar workers.

The up-front cost to government is ~$21,000 lower per [infill] home than building homes at the outer edge of cities and towns. Can someone explain like I'm 5 why govts are so resistant to infill at places like Nanaimo Stn, but it's so easy to build infra for sprawl in Coquitlam, Langley, etc?

There (mostly) shouldn't be special charges on new developments. That's what property taxes are for. "The stuff getting developed doesn't generate enough in property taxes to cover its infrastructure costs" Your tax system and/or land use is... Incorrect.

Did Canada’s 10¢/L cut to gas tax really lower gas prices? Earlier in April, gas averaged 69¢/L more in 🇨🇦 than 🇺🇸. After the cut (April 20th), prices immediately dropped about 10¢ relative to 🇺🇸! But then started trending back up again. Prices today are only 3¢ lower than before the cut.
Chart showing the difference between Canadian and American gas prices. Initially, Canadian gas prices are 69 cents/L higher. After a gas tax cut of 10 cents/L, they fall about 10 cents to 59 cents/L higher than US prices. However, they start to climb relative to US prices after that.

If only we had electeds here who would fight for bus lanes too. Fun fact, several buses in Victoria (including the 26!) carry more daily ridership than the Route 8 in Seattle, but apparently bus lanes on McKenzie are a crime against humanity that must never be allowed to happen.

We are increasingly building an inside-out metro, where dense housing is located further away. This is very much an outcome of calcified, inflexible zoning, not market forces. It means longer commutes, more congestion, higher taxes for more roads, & higher emissions. Now... 3/4
The apartment share of total metro housing starts outside of Vancouver has surpassed the share within the City of Vancouver

One of my biggest takeaways from living in Tokyo was that the city is incredible in spite of the fact that 95% of the architecture is unremarkable. It makes the years-long design review process for a single apartment building in the U.S. seem all the more frivolous.
