The average commute duration in Victoria is only 4 minutes shorter than Calgary. 25km from downtown Calgary gets you into rural areas, not unlike Victoria. Riding in the rain is just as if not more unpleasant than dry cold. At 5°-10° and rain your choices are wet from the rain or wet from sweat.

Fort St. John is a terrible city to get around without a car. Oh, you want to walk somewhere? Screw you.

Hopefully usage will pick up and I'll be proven wrong. However, Lime faces an uphill battle. Dockless bike share usage is stagnant in North America. Combined with a lack of regional integration and e-bikes only, I can't see it being a huge success.

A disappointing start for Victoria's latest bike share attempt. With just over 2 rides per bike per day, we're well below the average of 5.1 rides per day per bike for docked bike shares. We're also below the 3 rides per day per bike that dockless systems average.

Trackless trams?

Look at the US vs the EU. EU systems tend to have higher fare recovery ratios, but higher ridership. As a result, the EU has much more equitable transportation outcomes. Outside of systems with negligible fare revenue already, eliminating fares isn't worth it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farebox...

So you do have data. Share it then. Also, if you're going to use London specific injury data, you also need to use London specific mode share data. TfL's data shows that private vehicles made 8.2x as many trips as bicycles in 2024. If cars cause 24x the injuries, they're much more dangerous.

That's simply not true. For every injury or fatality caused by a cyclist in the UK, cars cause 275. Even adjusting for usage. Private vehicle 60% mode share vs bicycle 1.5% mode share, cars are still almost 7x more dangerous.

"The real policy question is whether vehicle capacity is being reduced faster than the region can realistically change how people travel" Does Wilson know that vehicle volumes dropped by 13% between 2017 and 2022 and cycling was the only mode to add users?

Availability of transit service is also an equity issue. Cars are expensive. Providing good transit service so people can switch from cars saves people more money than does eliminating fares. Transportation in the EU is more equitable, despite lower subsidies. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farebox...

There are lots of downtown offices where workers would likely take public transit when they return to the office, but there's also a lot of suburban offices. Journey to work transit mode share in Victoria is almost identical to DC, so I don't think it's the case that Victoria is just more suburban.

I'm not entirely sure about that. Victoria, where I live has a lot of government employment. While transit ridership dropped, total travel did too. I suspect it was investment in active transaction that caused the mode share changes. I don't think return to office will change that.

I'm not sure if I would call almost $47,000/daily boarding great. It's good, but nothing extraordinary. For context, with a cost of $2.2B USD and estimated ridership of 167,000 daily boardings, Vancouver's Broadway subway has a cost per daily boarding of a little over $13,000 USD.

Sure they could have. The worst they can say is "no." There's no magic required for more funding. Seattle did it, so did Calgary, Toronto, Los Angeles. Even Victoria, a city 1/5th the size of Portland has a higher transit mode share than Portland and with only busses.

Transit mode share in Vancouver is low enough that it should have still been growing despite the drop in travel demand caused by COVID. Bus service should have been expanded rather than moved from the core to the suburbs. In Victoria, bike trips grew through COVID, despite a drop in total travel.

Overall ridership is growing however, bus ridership in the core is dropping. This is because TransLink is moving service from the core to the suburbs rather than expanding service.

A lot of other busses use the Douglas Street corridor. Combined volumes on Douglas ranged from 24,000 to 63,000 passengers per day in 2019.

I wonder if it would be possible to have an alignment that passes through Lonsdale then access waterfront from the east?

There are a significant number of car light households. However, 1 car per worker is the standard by a wide margin. The data is from Victoria which has the second lowest car mode share in Canada.
