My favorite part of such a wonderful thread. I've been struggling (ha!) to articulate why it is that AI cannot make art. This ties it into place. Creation and life is collective striving but never achieving of equilibrium. It's the mechanism of struggle, and it's beautiful. AI can't struggle.

And this is where I might agree with John: the machine eliminates that struggle and the growth that comes with it. Writers, myself included, discover our "voice" through a process of struggling with it, testing it out in different environments, and integrating the results into our future work.

Perhaps writing no longer hurts because you have developed habits that smooth out the rough edges of the process. Perhaps writing doesn't hurt because you know the materials so well that it comes as naturally as breathing. Perhaps writing hurts, albeit in a different way than it used to.

So, while the argument might have an intuitive force behind it when leveraged against AI, I think we might want to pause here: beyond the fact that AI can't feel pain, AI cannot work through, or struggle with, the process of writing. It has never labored over word choice or wrestled with a text.

So if "writing should hurt," then we need to ask ourselves Lorde's question from the Cancer Journals: "how much of this pain can I feel and still remain unblinded." We need to ask ourselves what we're learning from the pain of writing as we experience it. What does it teach us?

Which is exactly what AI denies: the possibility of growth. The thing that Dewey and Lorde take to be fundamental to our nature as persons, that we grow. And in growing, we become something more than we once were. By offloading that process to AI, we annihilate what it is that allows us to become.
