NIMBYs in my town love to scream, "Where's the parking!!!" whenever new housing or mixed use is proposed downtown. The parking is literally everywhere. It's never full. It's all free. You may have to walk a few hundred feet though and that's not allowed.

Also I cannot stress enough that if the prep DOES sound bad to you, but you’re low risk and don’t mind doing some science, you can get a Cologuard prescribed and do a lil’ poop lab at home

i mean admitting zero of them is A Choice, specifically and literally

Andromeda Yelton @thatandromeda.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Also it is WILD to me that actually zero of the people of unknown gender were admitted. Just thinking about Mx19's college application process and uhhhhhhhhhh nonbinary people are not exactly UNREPRESENTED. Particularly at nerdy/neurodivergent colleges which, historically, was very much Chicago??

Ugh. I guess they always ran that risk but that is extremely a bummer. (i applied there, alumni are wildly overrepresented among my friends, so I appreciate their good qualities a lot, but cannot deny certain risks)

but theorems output as the collateral exhaust fumes of model evals give you facts, not insights. At least not directly. Only by studying those facts intensively can you relate those facts back to genuine insight. And that's the heart of the fissure between labs and the mathematical community.

This (in the context of its thread) dovetails with what I was hashing through about LLMs from a tech lead perspective; deliverables can be made fast but the often-social and meat-based process of generating understanding can’t, and we still NEED that for stuff I do like proofs too though

Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

this also seems to me like a very big tradeoff, because your point is very valid, but also a lot of sites are falling apart under the load from these AI scrapers, and I 100% get them wanting to make the scrapers pay the costs for keeping the site up...

not saying that today's content is a pure and shining example of quality race and gender portrayals but there are some real differences in how people talk about these things and what gets talked about at all So. "train on public domain" encodes a pretty big tradeoff.
130
Andromeda Yelton @thatandromeda.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
To be honest, I have very mixed feelings on public domain materials as a training set. I mean. Obvious yay for the IP/respect-for-creators issues! But also the public domain is strongly biased toward old stuff and ummmm have you seen the attitudes about, say, race and gender in old newspapers

Always did seem to me that we should have a better collective notion of what exactly to do about that mural. And why.
000
Andromeda Yelton @thatandromeda.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
And in the 90s (as the good folder will tell you) they restored it and had a re-unveiling ceremony at which there were local dignitaries, such as a pastor representing Medford's historically significant Black community The newspaper does not record what he was THINKING about this
100
Andromeda Yelton @thatandromeda.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
There have been debates over the years as to what exactly ought to be done about the mural and no one ever really gets anywhere. Last I heard they had put a tarp over it so they didn't have to think about it but also they didn't have to SEE it. Decades ago actually it had fallen into disrepair +

Years ago I interviewed Houston Mayor Annise Parker who told me one of the main reasons the city was able to cut homelessness by so much is she forced all the governments and nonprofits into a room and made them use the same data system. Meanwhile in LA www.latimes.com/california/s...
The agencies use different data systems, and even different Google spreadsheets, to produce their reports and often have different bureaus within them managing different housing programs. For example, a senior director for Bass told the interviewers that the Inside Safe program uses an internal Google spreadsheet to manage its occupancy records and does not have access to the Homeless Management Information System, the countywide database that tracks street contacts with homeless people and housing placements
