thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 13hHuman training ≠ AI “training” What is true of one is not true of another. A defence of artists learning is not a defence of generative AI. 000
thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 14hThe flaw in your defence of AI remains: you do not say why artists learning [using their works of others] is ethical, or establish that generative AI is equivalent in that respect. 000
thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 14hApologies; I realised I was not as direct in my answer as I could have been (“Do you not think” instead of “I would argue”), but had not seen you’d already replied when I deleted it to rephrase. 110
thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 14hI would argue that “training” on the works of others, without consent or compensation, is generally unethical. 110
Reposted by thaspookalyson “october” greaves @badambulist.bsky.social · 15hIt’s so funny to imagine what the UK could be like if it took seriously any of its cultural icons—that aren’t wizards, Shakespeare, or in possession of good fortune but in want of a wife. We could have Tyranid statues at Heathrow. Perhaps a grisly frieze depicting Servitor conversion at Gatwick. 27717135

thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 15hBut you’re making these arguments in response to others arguing that generative AI is unethical, yes? What is the equivalence to art, or to learning art, that you argue means generative AI is equivalently ethical? 110
thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Are you claiming that it isn’t just regurgitating works, or that regurgitating works isn’t unethical? 100
thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Do you think artists “generalising patterns” is what makes learning art ethical? 110
thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 05/10/2026If you’re not lying then you don’t understand, despite claiming you did. Pick one. 000
thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I can’t explain it any more simply than I already have, but your lack of understanding doesn’t justify lying. 100
thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Then you understand that you are arguing against a position I haven’t taken; you are arguing against a straw man and lying about it. 100

thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Do you genuinely not understand that I am not arguing that generative AI is unethical just because it differs from art and how artists learn? 110
thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 05/10/2026This IS the reason. It’s not a valid argument, regardless of what A, B, α, β, γ, or δ are. 000

I couldn’t take a photo, but I’m pretty sure this is an honest recollection. 011
thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Right…if you remove everything probabilistic then whatever remains is probabilistic. That’s true of all fuzzy/probabilistic systems. 000
thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Which traits? If A and B share traits β, γ, and δ, and B has trait α, it doesn’t follow that Α also shares trait α. That’s the flaw I already described. 100

thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Alternatively, if you take a weaker premise: 1. A is equivalent to B in some respects. then it does not necessarily follow that B has a particular property that A has (e.g. “is ethical”); you would need to demonstrate that A is equivalent to B with respect to why B is ethical. You haven’t. 200

thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 05/10/2026For reasons I’ve stated earlier. It is not necessary for me to recapitulate the arguments of others (that generative AI is unethical) to point out a flaw in your counterargument. Neither the flaw in nor validity of your argument depends on my ability to answer to your satisfaction. 000
thaspook @tharook.bsky.social · 05/10/2026An art director may be an artist, but commissioning an artwork does not make someone an artist. Any creativity involved in using generative AI is in the prompt, not the generation. When you commission art, you benefit from the creativity of the artists you commission. 000
