I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

For years - decades - we’ve been imploring people to save trees by using less paper, to conserve water by flushing less for urine than faeces, to save energy by switching off lightbulbs. This year, Europe roasted in unbelievably high temperatures.

100%. For too long companies have paid unliveable wages in the knowledge that governments will make taxpayers make those wages up to liveable level. Why, oh why, are taxpayes made to subsidise profiteering companies? Companies need to pay liveable wages not sponge off taxpayers.

We should all do our bit to save water, says an interviewee on BBC Radio 4’s Today. Of course we should. However, people are unlikely to be enthusiastic about helping out the water firms, which have given ~£80 billion to shareholder, built no reservoirs and poisoned our rivers and seas with shit.

The same goes for the idea that net zero is like, say, highway beautification: nice to have if you can afford it, but otherwise easily deferred. No. The longer we wait to reach net zero, the higher the eventual peak temperature will be, and the worse the associated damage. Warming is now
nearly 1.4C above pre-industrial levels. Imagine summers when it gets closer to
2C. And please don't say your country's net zero efforts are pointless when it only accounts for a few per cent of global emissions. This buck-passing claim is made in dozens of countries, even though
their combined emissions exceed China's.
