Those who could find a tunnel that has no light at the end of it, and hold it up like a telescope to know the darkness also contains truths that could bring the light to its knees. Grief astronomer, adjust the lens, look close, tell us what you see. (RIP Andrea, what a loss)

Grief Astronomer by Andrea Gibson A difficult life is not less worth living than a gentle one. Joy is simply easier to carry than sorrow. And your heart could lift a city from how long you’ve spent holding what’s been nearly impossible to hold. This world needs those who know how to do that.

Turns out I've done a *few* extra raglan increases on my 🧶 tshirt while I haven't been paying attention 😆 Back I go... #knitsky
Photo of some faded denim blue knitting held in a pale hand, with a raglan increase in the centre. One needle at the top of the work on the left, with loose stitches on the right, the other needle a dozen or so rows (who am I kidding, it's sixteen) down, picking up stitches, including stitchmarkers at the raglan increase. In the background, slightly out of focus, is a bright rainbow waves blanket.

The pattern I'm working from is free, called the Bad Idea Blouse, using a cotton yarn on 4mm needles.

The sky today
A photo of the sky, clouds cover it in varying layers, dark in a triangle from lower left to upper right and across. The sun is bright to the middle left, hazy behind the clouds. In the lower part of the photo, silhouetted trees and a couple of roofs line the shot, along with a solitary lamppost. The cloud along the bottom is tinted an orange-ish yellow. A photo of the sky, soft and purple, with rounded purple-tone clouds in the lower half of the photo, underlit with yellow. Silhouetted in the foreground are trees, a lit streetlight, and a trellis fence. A roofline is in the front right, cut off by the edge of the photo. The image feels like soft morning stillness before the start of the day.

Was struggling to find something yellow to post for this week's #showMeYourKnits without posting yet another cowl, forgetting this glorious crossbody bag I made a few months ago and use all the time and brings me All The Joy. Slightly felted to prevent things slipping through any holes. 🧶 #knitsky
Photo of a golden-yellow knitted and felted cross-body bag (beltbag) with a chunky black zip and a black clasp on the righthand side. The belt part is made in garter stitch and is adjustable in length. The colour is glorious.

This new pattern is inspired by the Star card, perfect for Matariki and the Winter Solstice. And invites us to ask: 1. Where do we get our nourishment? 2. What futures are we planting seeds for? 3. What are we pouring our love into? #tarotsky #tarottalk #tarotalt #magicalbazaar #tarotspreads
A photo of knitting from the Hope Grows Roots Cowl, overlaid with three labelled card outlines at the top, below are three questions: 1. Where di we get our nourishment? 2. What futures are we planting seeds for? 3. What are we pouring our love into?

Clothes continue to fascinate me because what we choose to wear is never ever neutral (even if we think it is - even the idea of neutral colours is not neutral!). Clothes rest against our skin, intimately so. They signal who we are, how we live, and what our worldview is.

Just finished this cowl today, Hope Grows Roots, perfect timing for this week's #ShowMeYourKnits so you can get the blocking mat photo 🧶 It gave me lots of me practice at 3-colour stranded knitting, though there's also a 2-colour version without any float management. 🧶 Pattern coming out soon.
Photo of Hope Grows Roots cowl made in grey, golden brown, and white spread flat and drying on a pale towel. The cowl is a design of ribbing at the top and bottom (grey), and a repetitive geometric design reminiscent of leaves (golden brown) and flowers (white). Two Hope Grows Roots cowls of different sizes and colours. One large and grey/golden brown/white takes up most of the photo. Layered over top in the upper left is a smaller one, made in navy blue/green/pink. The cowls' design is ribbing at the top and bottom with a repetitive geometric design reminiscent of leaves and flowers.

To pompom or not to pompom, that is the question, #knitsky 🧶 I was going to post this colourwork beanie as my #showMeYourKnits #WIP but I accidentally finished knitting it, I was enjoying it so much (and that finished crown is so satisfying!) - though without a pompom, is it really complete?
A photo from above of the crown of a blue and white colourwork knitted beanie, the colourwork splaying out from the blue crown in a satisfying star shape. The pre-cast-off try-on, with knitting needles still in the crown of the beanie, curls of the circular needle looping around, tails of yarn dangling down. Now the blue ribbed folded brim can be seen, as can the geometric white and blue colourwork repetitive patterning. A hilarious stage of the process.

one thing I believe is it’s important to celebrate good things 10x as hard and to look for them 10x as often because our animal brains are hard-wired to pay 10x as much attention to bad things; it keeps us alive, but it doesn’t keep us happy happiness has to be fought for, survival will tend itself

We need to rediscover the magic and wonder in making things. No other animal on earth knits. Most humans can't make a pair of socks, and there's a moment where a person moves from not being able to make socks to being able to make socks and that's kind of magical. We should be excited about that.

I had the Six of Swords follow me around for 18 months until I made a knitting pattern from it. Did all the enquiry spreads, the journaling, everything I could think of. Wouldn't leave me alone. Until this. 🧶 Name is short for 'May your pain guide the way home'. ravel.me/way-home-cowl
Photo of the Six of Swords card from the Fifth Spirit Tarot resting on a knitted colourwork cowl on a blanket. The card depicts a row boat on a black sea with rough water behind, smooth water infront, no one is in the boat but there are six giant nails point down in the bow of the boat. Overhead fly six birds (geese?) in a V formation pointing in the same direction as the boat. The sky looks like the sun might be about to rise, with light coming from just below the horizon and a crescent moon in the upper right corner. Beneath the card is a knitted cowl which has a geometric colourwork design with pointed shapes in light pink on a navy blue background, with navy blue ribbing at top and bottom. The shapes are slightly reminiscent of swords. Beneath both the card and cowl is a soft blue blanket.

Two fluffy wristwarmers coming up! 🧶🧶🧶 Made from simple rib in the round, worked in the flat for the thumb hole, before joining back in the round. And then fluffying up with a slicker brush. I'd recommend a test swatch first. Now I want to make all the fluffy things.... 😁 #knitsky
Two lime green wristwarmers lie before you, one fluffy, one not. A slicker brush lies above them, ready to go to work. The unfluffed wristwarmer shows that they are made in a simple ribbed stitch, with a hole for the thumb part way down from the top.

Working on this hypersaturated cowl this week #knitsky #showMeYourKnits 🧶 I love how from across the room the colours just blend together into a fantastic pinky-purple of my inner child's dreams
Photo of a knitted cowl work in progress in stranded colourwork made of lilac-purple and bright almost-orangey-pink. Ribbing at the bottom is in the purple. A thumb and finger are visible at the left top holding the needles. The colourwork pattern is repetitive geometric-ish and sort of leafy. It is from an upcoming design by me called 'hope grows roots', this is a sample made in fingering weight yarn, but it will also be available for DK weight yarn.

#knitsky my swatch pile is looking amazing right now! Found some cones of bright colours at an op shop recently, so I'm not sure what I'll knit yet, but the colours are making me happy. The green fuzz on top? that's requested wristwarmers for a young friend, made with a slicker brush 😁 🧶🧶🧶
Photo of a haphazard pile of small knitted rectangles on a white windowsill in bright colours - blue, pink, yellow, pastel pink, with a fuzzy lime green one on top. They all have tails of yarn hanging off. Green trees are visible out of focus beyond the window.

Behold the blood moon! By which, of course, I mean, an incredibly blurry photo of said moon, in which you can barely tell it is either moon or eclipse, but there _is_ some red. It was a lovely bright crescent here, with a dark red rest-of-whole. #bloodMoon
An incredibly blurry photo of the blood moon from 14 March 2025, showing a wobbly blurry circle with a bright white crescent on the lower right and the upper left filled with darker red, all very unsharp and out of focus. The sky is probably out of focus too, but as it is just black, it is hard to tell.

Stash-diving to whip up a quick little felting project, only to find that one of the yarns must be superwash. Sigh. I guess this is what you get when you inherit yarn from someone who never kept the labels. Can't frog it now 🤣 #knitsky 🧶
A square of colourwork knitting, the front of a coin purse, lies on a black background. It is made of peachy-pink leafy shapes on a purple background. The peachy-pink yarn has been felted. The purple stitches remain defined and unfelted, with some looseness where the purple top edge has not shrunk with felting, but the lower colourwork has.
The colourwork pattern is currently called, 'May your hope grow roots', and is a forthcoming design.

#ShowMeYourKnits asks for WIPs, but I don't think I can count them all without panicking slightly, so here's one my hands are enjoying. A new colourwork design and some nice shades of green 🧶 #knitsky
A half-made knitting project draped over balls of yarn on a pale grey couch. It is colourwork in two shades of green, the lighter and yellower shade slightly reminiscent of leaf patterns against the darker green which also forms ribbing at the bottom of the knitting. Some of the back of the knitting, with floats, is visible at the bottom of the photo.

I cast on a bold pink project this week because I needed the dopamine. I had to dig out some straight needles for it because all my right size circulars were already taken. So maaaybe I have too many WIPs on the go rn. But at least this one's vibrancy is making me happy. 🧶 #showmeyourknits #knitsky
Bright pink knitting on a straight knitting needle, with some white colourwork at the top, lies diagonally across a black-clothed lap. A few lightbulb stitch markers are visible along the needle. My #skyKAL knitting project 🧶 has a neckhole! Well, again. Second time's the charm. Now just to knit all the tiny stitches to get to the base of the armholes...
The smiling lower half of the face and shoulders of a pale skinned person are shown with a partly-knitted blue top worn over a t-shirt with a hand holding the bottom of it down to show the shape of the V neckline. Stitch markers dot the neckline to mark increases, and the knitting needle curls it up at the edges of the shot.

Before you finish one project, you must knit the swatch for the next, right #knitsky? 🧶 I'm about to start on the fingering weight sample of my Way Home Cowl and needed to decide which colour to hold as my 'main'. Any preferences for top or bottom of my swatch?
A swatch of patterned colourwork knitting in bright pink and lemon yellow, still on the needles, lies on top of a background of the same pattern but in a larger weight of yarn in a navy blue and pale pink.
