Calvin and Hobbes really called it, didn’t they?
A black and white drawing from a Calvin and Hobbes strip. They are sitting together on a tree branch. Calvin says, with a furrowed brow, “isn’t it sad how some people’s grip on their lives is so precarious that they’ll embrace any preposterous delusion rather than face an occasional bleak truth?”

Oof. I'm currently reading @naomialderman.bsky.social's "Don't burn anyone at the stake today" and it's prompting me to rethink a lot of my smartphone use... This passage popped up this morning while staying at a friend's after a lovely evening out to see some music last night.

Feeling incredibly lucky to have found a copy of this @petefowlerart.bsky.social book - I've been after one for ages! Turns out it's an ex library book, but is in pristine condition!

@jeffvandermeer.bsky.social My wife got me the first three area X books in the shiny new paperback format a little while ago. It's half past 5 in the morning in the UK. I don't really want to be awake but I have a cup of tea and a cat on my lap. Time to dive in to a reread of Annihilation

Sometimes, when I'm up earlier than I want to be I have a sneaky caramelised biscuit tea as my first cup of the day.... @yorkshiretea.bsky.social Oh, hello 5am 😴

Hades is currently less than £7 on the Switch sale. Anyone care to help convince me to buy it?

Just switched the TV over to Blue Planet and have now convinced myself there is a rich seam of insults to be had from David Attenborough narration. Imagine getting into and argument and whipping out a devastating phrase like "you pulsating bell!" or "You're nothing but a colonial jelly!"

Fellow mid-forties humans - do you find you're waking up with headaches more often as you age or is it just me (though it may be the slightly higher alcohol and unhealthy food intake of the festive season)? Treating it with tea, toast, some quiet music and a good book...

Didn't get any #Transformers for Christmas this year (though I do have two more Void Rivals books to read courtesy of my wife!) s Decided to open up the Comic Grimlock I bought for myself earlier on the year - he's an awesome figure and I'm really glad I got him over the studio series version!

Finally watched It's a Wonderful Life, and it absolutely deserves classic status. Feel a bit silly for never having seen it, but sure it will become a Christmas tradition!

My 12yo has been allowed access to Fortnite, and it's making me miss simpler games like unreal tournament, team fortress and Spellbreak... The menus hurt my head.

Pairing todays early morning reading from @chuckwendig.bsky.social "The Staircase in the Woods" with some Deathprod on the stereo. Appropriate that the current track playing is titled "Dead People's Things"....
The hardback cover of a special Ever night edition of Chuck Wendig's novel The Staircase in the Woods, featuring a cut through view of an impossible house.

Every room is different, unconnected but has some feature hinting at darkness, and the phrase "this place hates you" is etched into the paper of one wall.

Suspect I'm hitting the brick wall / cliff edge with my physical fitness. Any fellow millennials out there got advice for routines to get into as a borderline 45yo to prevent back pain? I walk/cycle to work a number of times a week so I'm not inactive, just starting to struggle with my back!

A question from my daughter after passing a bunch of teenage boys hanging out in the generic black puffer/tracksuit uniform with their bikes: "Do you think boys would actually choose to dress like that if they weren't in a big group?. Are they just afraid to stand out?"

Rewatched @dantrachtenberg.bsky.social's brilliant Prey. It's better than either of the original Predator Films, and I'm really looking forward to Badlands. Going to have to rewatch Killer of Killers now...

I think America are missing a trick here. All someone needs to do is invent a machine which runs on bullshit and then they can just strap it to Donald Trump. Energy crisis solved. ...and he'd actually become useful!

Reacquired a book I'd lent out and opened it randomly to a page yesterday... I'd already contemplated booking today off at short notice but this sealed the deal!
A section of the book "Silence" by Erling Kagge which reads:

"Another form of luxury is to be unavailable. To turn your back on the daily din is a privilege. Letting others take over tasks in your absence. The decision not to reply to text messages or pick up when the phone rings. Expectations from colleagues, business connections and family that are not important to you are handed over to someone else or ignored altogether."

6am in the UK, and #earlyrisersbookclub choice is @chuckwendig.bsky.social's Star Wars Trilogy which I found second hand a while back. Appropriate stuff given the current state of the world... Pro tip: fascism bad!
