This week, Hugo notes conference season was all about resurgent, popular Labour and Tory parties celebrating their return to a robust two-party system, and asks the most obvious question: what if none of that is true, because it’s just bullshit?

Labour and the Tories are feeling pretty good after party conference season - but is a return to two-party politics really on the cards, or are they kidding themselves?

NEW: Home Office stats released today reveal that arrests for "terrorist-related activity" in the year ending June 2026 were up 1,553% on last year and 94% of the arrests (3,630 of 3,867) were linked to showing support for Palestine Action.

How Israel's relentless killing of over 1000 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2025 can be called a "ceasefire" is beyond me- its brainwashing. Aljazeera noted: Israel attacked Gaza on 325 of the past 361 days, leaving only 36 days with no reported attacks, deaths or injuries.

A great demonstration of the irreality of Israeli politics. Netanyahu's theme on the third anniversary of Oct 7 is that he will block Hamas rule in Gaza. But in fact Netanyahu enabled Hamas rule in Gaza for years in order to assure a split with the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah.

For many residents in terraced homes and apartments, having nowhere safe to keep a bike is a real barrier to cycling. A BikeBunker removes that barrier using the space of a single car parking bay, an easy measure any city can adopt to get more people cycling every day.

As previously noted: the end of this trajectory isn’t “two states”. The consequence is us sitting here in twenty years with the Palestinians long eradicated, watching the Robo-IDF “fight terrorism” in its Lebanese and Syrian provinces. And it’s not like our leaders don’t understand this.

I am terrified about the election tbh. California never seems to miss an opportunity to fuck up. I've been sticking to SF bc the Metreon IMAX & Karl, but maybe it's time to look into that Canada option. (Like they don't do the same thing. Democracy is not meeting the moment.)

One thing about Copenhagen is that there's tons of dense housing but you *never* find it fronting a busy road with cars racing past, which describes about 90% of the apartments in the US. They manage to make it feel tucked away, private, cozy. (These are all from Sluseholmen, my dream neighborhood.)

Again, an *immediate* reaction from the cops and a forensic investigation by the EHRC would be quite clarifying here. Presumably this time with lots of shrieking about “Islamist infiltration” and so on, because a lot of important people have spotted they can just say what they mean quite openly now.

Zack Polanski's party was plunged deeper into crisis this afternoon after politicians, led by former Home Office minister Mike Tapp, urged police in Brighton to examine whether events at the Green conference may have crossed into criminally actionable racial or religious hatred against Jewish people.

To carry 50,000 people per hour in each direction, a city needs a 175m wide road for cars. Even if those cars are electric. And then there’s all the parking. OR a city can move A LOT MORE people in a lot less space, with A LOT LESS public money, emissions, pollution, noise etc. Choices. Simple.
Graphic showing a single lane 9 m wide track for metros, a 35 m wide road for buses with four lanes, and a 175 m wide road for cars with seven lanes, making the point that one single track of Metro replaces seven lanes of car traffic. Mobility in cities is about space.
