So I feel like I've been to enough funerals recently to be in a position to judge that today's was the absolute worst yet. No celebration of life, all religions passages & sermons. Amazing fucking Grace the only hymn. Nothing of the man himself evident in the short service. He would have hated it.

Team, I am dealing with yet another death (co-worker's suicide) and as I prepare to go to the 4th funeral of the year, I am grateful for pals who take me to hardware stores and help me paint walls, and others who let me join them on dog walks in nice parks on sunny days. How good are good friends?

How do you dress a fat man who died skinny and gaunt? I bought him new pants for his birthday 3 weeks ago because all of his were way too big. This guy had got rid of all his formal wear by the end too, so the old Hawaiian shirt and cargo shorts he wore on several whanau Christmases it is.

My father is literally on his death bed, barely able to move or communicate, yet managed to wink at a hospice nurse tonight when she was joking with him. A gentleman with a sense of humour to the end.

vale isaac. you were the one single unproblematic member of the 00s auckland goth scene. you made the world a better place than you left it.

a photo taken at a goth night in the mid 00s. i'm in the middle, one of my dreadlocks got caught up in my glasses, lol. lilly sits to my left (your right). isaac sits beside me. i must've just finished telling a joke, or a story, as he is laughing uproariously. he lived passionately. what i remember the most of him is him being the most honest, most intense, the most unconventional of everybody i'd ever known. he was an english teacher and he must have left thousands of teenagers better off than when he met them, and who can claim that sort of impression on our lives? he was one of the best of us, and i'll miss him.
