Useful guide to disabling the AI features in #calibre - the ebook management application. Yes there are forks with it taken out but it's early days for those yet and I'll wait and see if they thrive. Anyway this will do for now. joelchrono.xyz/blog/disable-calibre…
joelchrono.xyz
How to turn off Calibre AI features
A while back Calibre—a book management program which I have been using for years—integrated AI features, in an option that showed up in the context menu, when selecting a book and clicking on _View_ , titled _Discuss selected book with AI_. Clicking it opens a chat interface that connects to any “provider”—also known as _slop generator_ —of your choice. Of course, I see no use for such a useless feature, and if you don’t either, here’s how to hide it completely: * Go to _Preferences_ > _Plugins_ > _AI provider_ , select each one and click on **Enable/disable plugin**. * Go to _Preferences_ > _Tweaks_ * Scroll all the way down until you see _Hide AI features_ (You could also use the search bar for this) * Go to the text editor box and set the variable to `True`. * Restart Calibre. All the references and buttons will be gone from Calibre’s interface, it’s a bit of a bummer that the plugins can’t be fully deleted, but hey, as they say, out of sight, out of mind. Of course there are also some forks made due to this addition in the form of Arcalibre, as well as library management alternatives like Booklore. Personally, regular Calibre works fine and I don’t really feel the need to fully switch away from it. It has been a great project for years, and since most of the alternatives are rather young and have yet to prove themselves, I am inclined to just not bother, at least for now. I started reading John @scalzi's "Zoe's Tale" today and this made me smile. "A girl could do worse."
Photo of page of ebook:

I glanced over at my parents about six meters away, kissing to celebrate the arrival. That seemed like a good idea. I reached my hand behind Enzo’s head to draw him to me and planted one right on his lips. Our first kiss. New world. new life, new boyfriend.

What can I say. I was caught up in the moment.

Enzo didn't complain. " ‘O brave new world, that has such people in it' " he said,
after I let him breathe again.

I smiled at him, my arms still around his neck. “You've been saving that up.” I said.

“Maybe.” he admitted. “1 wanted you to have a quality first kiss moment.”

See. Most sixteen-year-old boys would have used a kiss as an excuse to dive straight for the boobs. He used it as an excuse for Shakespeare. A girl could do worse.

I am done with this shit. It is over. The state of engineering right now is horrible. It has been half a month since I started a new role at a big company.
Nobody knows anything here. The specs, code, tests, PRDs, tickets, resolution of those tickets, reports, etc., everything is made by Claude Code.
Nobody on my team likes this. They are being forced to ship as much as they can. I have heard multiple times from higher management that pushing code is not a bottleneck, so why are we slow?People are working 12 to 13 hours a day just to press enter. Nobody is reading anything. Humans in corporate are doing nothing on their own. Everyone, literally everyone, from an L1 to an L7 engineer here is doing the same thing.
Talk to Claude. There is no sense of victory. Nobody is resolving bugs. In reality, nobody is thinking anymore.
Everything is done by LLMs. It is so soul-sucking. I would not mind it, to be honest, if we were at least given the time to check out the code and see what is going where. But no, the goal is to just ship. No matter what happens.

Rubio Uses Terrorism Law To Ban Secure Email Service
The U.S. State Department and U.S. Treasury placed the anarchist-aligned Italian tech support collective Autistici/Inventati on the "specially designated global terrorist" list on Wednesday. This designation makes it illegal for Americans to engage in any "transactions" with Autistici/Inventati. The U.S. government hasn't accused Autistici/Inventati of committing any crimes. Instead, the State Department announcement states that the group "builds and operates the digital infrastructure for violent Antifa cells and other far-left militants across the world," allowing these "militants" to "disseminate target information, tactical manuals and techniques, and communiqués about recent attacks" while staying "anonymous, untraceable, and beyond the reach of the law." In other words, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is attacking the group for running an online platform that the U.S. government can't spy on and for facilitating communications the U.S. government doesn't like. But precisely because Autistici/Inventati is based in another country—Italy—the U.S. government has basically unchecked power to impose counterterrorism sanctions on it. The Autistici/Inventati case has strong parallels to the recent TikTok ban: Congress banned the social media network under foreign-policy pretexts because American youth were using it to share otherwise First Amendment–protected content. As with the TikTok ban, outlawing Autistici/Inventati is a way to force users to move to services that are more easily monitored and controlled by the U.S. government. "The idea that an organization that is an alternative host—for email, websites, and other services—could be designated a terrorist organization simply for providing a service that a lot of people want…is scary," says Jillian York, director of international freedom of expression at the nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation. "This may sound a little conspiratorial, but the fact that this comes from an administration that is quite cozy with Silicon Valley giants, at a time when distrust of those companies is quite high from various parts of society, doesn't seem to me a coincidence." Autistici/Inventati offers free email accounts, web hosting, videoconferencing, and other communications services on request to those who can demonstrate need and "share our principles of anti-fascism, anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-homophobia, anti-transphobia, and anti-militarism." Unlike commercial email providers, Autistici/Inventati stores only the bare minimum of user data and doesn't peek into users' inboxes, making it appealing to "paranoids," as the group describes itself. "We deny all allegations included in the statements, while we strongly affirm our dedication to providing a platform of tools for digital self-defense, addressing the need of free communication for activists and other individuals, groups and associations," Autistici/Inventati wrote in a statement in English and Italian responding to the U.S. designation. "We will not back down, we will keep doing what we have been doing all these years and we will do whatever is in our possibility to counter the false allegations made by a politically desperate administration with the sole intention of swaying people and media attention away from their own violence and warmongering." The terrorist designation will immediately cut off Autistici/Inventati's ability to collect donations, its only way to cover operating expenses, through any bank or credit card processor connected to the U.S. dollar system. It may also allow the U.S. government to seize the autistici.org domain name. The U.S. government has long argued that, because the registries for .com and .org domains are located on American soil, it is illegal to host websites for organizations under U.S. economic sanctions. Whether the designation makes Autistici/Inventati's email services illegal to use is unclear. The International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which the Trump administration is using to sanction Autistici/Inventati, technically exempts any "personal communication, which does not involve a transfer of anything of value" from U.S. sanctions, in order to respect First Amendment protections. The Electronic Frontier Foundation says its lawyers believe that "simply utilizing these services, while providing no financial support to them, does not constitute material support for terrorism." But Peter Harrell, a former Biden administration official who is now a visiting scholar at Georgetown Law School, writes that it's an open question how courts would rule in this case. The Treasury did not respond to a question from _Reason_ about its interpretation of the law. The Trump administration has increasingly used these kinds of foreign policy powers against dissidents, especially self-declared "anti-fascists." Last year, the National Security Presidential Memorandum 7 (NSPM-7) ordered federal agencies to prioritize terrorism from the left. Rubio designated the German "hammer gang" Antifa Ost as terrorists soon after. "There will be no refuge for violent extremists who wage war on our civilization and plot to undermine law and order, destroy critical infrastructure, assault political opponents, or conspire to conceal their crimes from authorities," Rubio told Fox News about the Autistici/Inventati designation. The administration also tied its action against Autistici/Inventati to the campaign against Israel's enemies. The Treasury announced sanctions on Autistici/Inventati alongside new sanctions on the British organization Palestine Action for "breaking into defense infrastructure and British military installations," and the Palestinian diaspora party Masar Badil for being "a front for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization." The State Department's announcement, meanwhile, blames Autistici/Inventati for allowing one of its users "to publish official communiqués and calls to action for U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organizations," naming Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Fox News reported that the State Department announcement "reveals Portland Antifa connection to Hamas, Iran's IRGC," because of those third-party posts. Of course, by that same logic, there is a "connection" between Rubio himself and all of the same designated terrorists because their messages are disseminated on the same social media. The Treasury's announcement at least pointed to a designated terrorist organization that actually _used_ Autistici/Inventati's services: the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). But though the U.S. government considers the PKK terrorists, U.S. forces have also worked with its members and affiliates in Syria for more than a decade. Rubio met with Kurdish commander Mazloum Abdi, a former PKK member, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference earlier this year. Some people, it seems, are friendly enough to have an audience with cabinet officials, yet too dangerous to have an email address.

An Italian militant organization "Autistici/lnventati" has been classified as a "terrorist organization” by the US government for providing “untraceable” email hosting to Anifa groups. As a result of the designation, the organization's domain auistici.org has been suspended.

@bodhipaksa yeah, we did totality in Munich in 1999 and that was quite something. I don't think this is going to be particularly special, but it might make a nice drive west if the sky is clear.

My current score for this cyber attack on Beacon CRM is currently two charities with which I have accounts. I've already requested GPDR erasure on one, even though this horse has bolted. www.theregister.com/security/2026/0…

Now wondering if a trip to, say, Gairloch is worth the extra 1% for #eclipse2026 ... probably not but it might make a nice day out anyway .
Map from MetO showing percentage eclipse and peak time for locations across the British Isles. Essentially you get more the further WSW you go so SW Ireland is 96-98% but Nairn will be roughly 90.5% and Gairloch 91.5%

"[...] One of my coworkers, however, is a HUGE pain in the ass. "He will not stop using Microsoft Co Pilot for every. Single. Thing. "I ask him a question that I expect a single sentence for in response? He replies with paragraphs of slop that don’t even address what I’m asking. We need to […]

My latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Image: In a childrens library, a small boy contentedly reads a small picture book, while an angry-looking small girl storms past, carrying a very heavy book.

Caption:
Unfortunately for Charlotte, the adjudication committee decides that, for the purposes of the under-nines summer reading challenge, the six volumes of proust's 'in search of lost time' is considered to be one single narrative, whereas each of Roger hargreaves' mister men' books is a distinct work, thereby awarding the library's 'top reader' sticker to her brother Toby.

"One of the things Ford Prefect had always found hardest to understand about humans was their habit of continually stating the obvious. "At first Ford formed a theory to account for this human behaviour. If human beings don't keep exercising their lips, he thought, their mouths seize up […]

The council have put up some new signage round us which, as my wife points out, may be unfortunately correct.
A red triangle showing an elderly couple. Underneath, a sign saying "Elderly people". Underneath again, a sign saying "Crematorium" with an arrow pointing ahead which, unfortunately, points directly at the elderly people signs.
