In hindsight, it's very weird that I went on a primary school trip to Vaux Brewery. We got Lorimers Best Scotch key rings as souvenirs. I'm sure the drays were still on the streets in the 80s.

I'm not sure the world is any better or worse. But 'the news' (which is always bad) has gone from 30 minutes, 3-4 times a day, to 24/7 (verging on 25/8). So it's harder to switch off. And therefore feels worse. So we talk about how much worse it feels. And on, and on, eating our own tails.

What comes first, the egg or the cook? But I feel the world would be a sadder place without unintentionally hilarious menu items. Who wouldn't be tempted by 'ice cream in the ass' or 'sausage in the father-in-law' (both genuine, spotted on Russian menus).

Fair point. Transport is an issue that crops up repeatedly when I talk to people at organisations like @nomorenowt.bsky.social or @nheartlands.bsky.social - where opportunities are concentrated in big cities, it's a battle to get there from East Durham or the dales.
010
Talking Northeast @talkingnortheast.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Of course, if our public transport operated as a service rather than a money-maker, these issues might be easier. But having struggled for years to get back to Durham after gigs, shows etc, I'm resigned to driving. Which is another expense and aggravation.

Once my daughter started copying what I was saying, my driving had to change. The low point was heading off to a playgroup in the church hall, muttering 'oh, for Christ's sake!' a bit too loudly, and hearing it parroted all afternoon by a 3yo who thought she was ever so grown-up!

I'm looking forward to sharing Blazing Saddles with my 9yo, it's my all-time favourite movie. But the screening will have to be prefaced with the same 'grown-up' talk we had before going to the football for the first time. 'You'll hear people say some things you've been told not to say ...'

Little costs of the heat wave. Planned to go on a bike ride with my 9yo today. By the time I'd put the bins out, it was clear that any kind of physical exertion would be unpleasant at best. So instead of some healthy outdoor fun (y'know, kids being kids and all that) we ended up inside. Rubbish!
