🚉 176 years ago today, Queen Victoria officially opened Newcastle Central Station. These 1971 photographs show two sides of a building that helped reshape Newcastle: John Dobson’s grand city-facing frontage, and behind it, the platforms, tracks and great curved roofs of a working railway.

🏗️ 100 years ago Gateshead was being reshaped for the Tyne Bridge. Taken 18 August 1926, this Dorman Long photograph shows workers cutting and rebuilding the roads that would form the bridge’s southern approach. Highlighting the scale of change happening at street level.
