I grew up going to the Academy of Natural Sciences and Franklin institute (my mom was a member and took us regularly). I probably wouldn’t be a scientist without them. Outreach is crucial to get future generations excited about science and engaged in school, and museums play a huge part in that.

Deepayan's thesis @utoronto.ca was advised by Profs. Marta Bryan and Kristen Menou, covering the fluid dynamics of stellar envelopes and planetary atmospheres. This paper wouldn't have happened without the OWL summer program (owl.ucsc.edu/summer/) -- somehow every time I go to OWL a paper happens!

(Newly minted) Dr. Deepayan Banik's final thesis paper is now on arXiv (arxiv.org/abs/2609.38128)! He studied the circulation of tide-locked planets with variable instellation using shallow-water theory and Dedalus simulations, finding resonance when instellation variation and wave timescales match.

I said I'd do a thread about my new Space Science Reviews paper, so here it is! This is part of a collection of papers arising from a meeting at the International Space Science Institute in Bern in 2024: a workshop to better understand rocky extrasolar planets. A 🧵:
Interior structure models of Earth, Venus, Mercury, Mars, the Moon, and Io, all shown to scale and key elements labelled.

My strategy is to assume that every proposal I submit is immediately rejected upon submission, and move on. Then when something actually gets selected it feels like a gift!

BOWIE+ Seminar Series @bowieseminar.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
The BOWIE+ seminar autumn schedule is out! Next week, we will begin with a talk by Matthäus Schulik of Imperial on his work on atmospheric escape. The rest of the autumn will be highlight talks by early career researchers. To get the zoom links, see the details in our bio. #exoplanets #astronomy

Bottom: text describing the BOWIE+ Collaboration: "We are a UK based collaboration with a focus on studying the atmospheres of exoplanets using the James Webb Space Telescope. We work together to create proposals for JWST GO time, holding both in-person and virtual collaborative meetings. Static retrieval frameworks are leading tools for interpreting exoplanet observations, yet time-independent modelling leaves them prone to degeneracy and unable to resolve exoplanets' histories. The c...

Famous #exoplanet K2-18 b: is it a super-Earth, a sub-Neptune, or something else entirely? 🌍🌔☁️🪐 The secret of its interior lies in its exterior... the atmosphere! Hear more from Shang-Min (Shami) Tsai's #RockyWorldsDiscussion on Thu 7 May @ 13:00 UTC! More: www.rockyworlds.org/event-detail... 🧪🔭
An image of the speaker, Shang-Min (Shami) Tsai. He is smiling and looking into the camera. He has short dark hair, is wearing glasses, and a white striped shirt. He is stood inside, with a blurred background behind him featuring a window.Credits: Illustration: NASA, ESA, CSA, Joseph Olmsted (STScI); Science: Nikku Madhusudhan (IoA)

This illustration shows what exoplanet K2-18 b could look like based on science data. K2-18 b, an exoplanet 8.6 times as massive as Earth, orbits the cool dwarf star K2-18 in the habitable zone and lies 120 light years from Earth.

A new investigation with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope into K2-18 b, an exoplanet 8.6 times as massive as Earth, has revealed the presence of carbon-bearing molecules including methane and carbon dioxide.

The abundance of methane and carbon dioxide, and shortage of ammonia, support the hypothesis that there may be a water ocean underneath a hydrogen-rich atmosphere in K2-18 b.

In this illustration, the exoplanet K2-18 c is shown between K2-18 b and its star.
