No film captures what it feels like to wake up and read about the current state of America every single day quite like this one.

At least* 3 of the top 5 most challenged books on this list frankly and deftly address the topic of sexual violence, particularly its impact on survivors.

I went to visit my son (19) at college today, and offered to take him shopping for necessities or treats or whatever. He really loathes shopping, but reluctantly picked out: socks odor-absorbing shoe spray melatonin gummies a party-sized bag of nacho cheese Doritos 🥳🥳🥳

the Cornell case should make us question prosecutors and police all the time: the same DA offices discounting college students’ sexual assault cases (the lacking investigations, the disbelief) are happy to jail countless women for far less, day in and day out, when most people aren’t watching

Yeah, it’s not something I consider completely off-limits. But when I’m first meeting someone, I try to reflect on whether it’s more about me trying to sort of … head their ambivalence off at the pass because (understandably) I want them to feel better, sooner.

Over the years, I’ve learned to pause and consider whether the precise phrasing “It wasn’t your fault”, as my impulsive response when a victim/survivor expresses self-blame, is always going to land as supportive rather than dismissive for this reason. Especially if their experience was very recent.

Someone in the comments suggests that the body glitter flecks could be imprinted with a microdot barcode, tracing back to the person who purchased the glitter, and who has (apparently, in this fantasy) registered as such: like when you microchip your dog. I ask again, and always, What are we doing?

I've been inundated with posts at least as unhelpful as this, often shared by people I know are just trying to find a foothold in the midst of a lot of pain. I'm sure the same is true of the content creator, who really does seem to care and want to offer some supportive remedies. But.
Facebook post from content creator with their name redacted. Text reads "Fun fact! Men are more likely NOT to attack you if they see you covered in glitter. Probably because they don’t want to be covered in it and questioned about it. But the most awesome part is… glitter is considered as reliable proof in court 🥰
Stay Safe Ladies ✨"

I am incensed by sexual violence, and also angry that the systems that have disappointed people are actually working as intended. A system's purpose is what it does. It's pretty hard to make progress without acknowledging that.

Anyway, I have a random day off of work due to an excess of PTO (hard to believe, but there are nonprofits that at least try, and even largely succeed, in treating their employees with ethical decency). I’d intended to clean the house. Am instead eating popcorn and watching GONJIAM HAUNTED ASYLUM.

This is not a revelation for the many survivors from oppressed groups grappling with the double bind of “Even these ineffectual remedies aren’t meant for you” and “If you don’t go through the motions of trying to access them, your story must lack credibility.”

I work in community-based advocacy: unaffiliated with systems, but helping victims/survivors navigate systems they bump up against. Which usually means caring for them through, and trying to mitigate, the shock and devastation of realizing systems don’t function the way they’re perceived to.

It's too grim to face the situation we are in, every time these cases come out in the news, which is there there is no law, policy, or policing remedy to sexual violence, and definitely not one that is capable of ending sexual violence.

Stories like this have, for ages, treated men's desire to harm women as a sort of background noise, a weather we just normalize and accept and try to work around. Feminism is among other things a process of denormalization.

Read a comment on IG positing that nudity was never OK in a documentary (one guess what this was about) because nudity is only ever appropriate as a “plot-forwarding device” and “documentaries don’t have characters or a plot” In case I was still imagining the internet as a great equalizer …

A problem I have about the pervasiveness of GenAI outside of the basic ethical nonstarters is that I… I don’t want to live in a world where I have to doubt, scrutinize or investigate everything I see that isn’t happening right in front of me. I find it horrible, exhausting & time consuming.

Listen, this film has some second act narrative lag, and of course, for at least 20 years of its 30+ year existence, it’s been blighted by unrestrained, landfill-bound merchandise tie-ins. But the thing itself is an artistic marvel.
