People who are fighting against Data Centres in their region: I am looking for useful resources on how you guys organise, studies, articles, sources that can help clarify how data centres operate in communities, their impact, etc. I am collating a resource pack for my local protest group.

Can’t eat a sandwich until you subscribe to sandwiches. Can’t eat today’s sandwich until it has applied daily sandwich updates. Sandwich now has adverts even though you paid for ad-free sandwich. Can pay again to have less sandwich adverts. Now you can eat the sandwich, but it’s smaller.

In the newsletter: "Visualization as epistemic representation" openvisualizationacademy.beehiiv.com/p/visualizat... Or: Building bridges between information design and the philosophy of science & scientific representation #dataViz #dataVisualization #infographics
A diagram depicting the cycle of epistemic representation. An object called the "vehicle" (a chart, for example) represents another object, called the "target" (for instance, a data set). The reader of the "vehicle" can make inferences about the vehicle itself, and later they can use those inferences to make inferences about the "target"

"There has to be a better way of connecting and sharing and existing together, a way that isn't locked into the exploitative doom loops and psychic death of what we currently have. A way that's built around humans again, not around algorithms. A way that values connection instead of confrontation."

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.

A question for the #RStats and #ggplot2 hivemind: What things do you find most tricky or frustrating in ggplot2? It might be things like specific chart types, aspects of styling, your workflow, saving charts etc.

This sign is a great example for helping to explain why chatbots present such a potent illusion. A probably not short thread 🧵>>
Photo of a sign with a doorbell attached. The printed sign reads:

CURRENT GUGGENHEIM ACCES BY HUSKY CARD ONLY
[Logos for Amazon, FedEx, UPS]
DELIVERIES/VISITORS
PLEASE RING THIS DOORBELL

Delivery hours M-F 9:00am-(obscured)
University of Washington

Taped next to the doorbell is a hand written note that reads:
yes! it rang! Pelase wait 30 seconds before pressing again.
thanks!

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Title: My confidence in my understanding of the scientific theory.

A diagram where the confidence is marked in red on an otherwise white figure

Panel 1
"Before I got a book about it."
The figure is red up to about his stomach

Panel 2
"While I was reading the book."
The figure is reading a book. He is red up to his forehead.

Panel 3
"When I had finished the book."
The red level has dropped to around his mouth

Panel 4
"One week later."
Now it is at his chest.

Panel 5
"When I try to explain it to somebody."
The level is back at stomach level.

Panel 6
"When they ask a follow-up question."
The red is so low we can barely see it.

I'm about to record a video lesson about AI in information/visualization design. I'll share the following heuristic. Does it make sense?
A personal heuristic about using AI in
information design/ visualization: Consider using it…

A) If you can clearly envision your desired design and the decisions and process that would lead to it if you were using non-AI tools instead.

B) Even better: If you —alone or as part of a team with sufficient time and resources— could recreate that same design with non-AI tools.
