I have a series of thoughts about the news that the Pentagon will be executing Hasan on an internet livestream, all paid for by the American taxpayer. Here’s an effort to put it into historical context, as I get past the shock: (1/11) www.nytimes.com/2026/10/08/u...

Fort Hood Shooter’s Execution Will Be Public and Streamed Live, Pentagon Says
If carried out, the public execution of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan by firing squad set for Dec. 3 would be the first in modern U.S. history.

Me, on the job market this year, reding that Atlantic article about DEI and quitting the tenure track: Yes, that’s terrible Everyone should consider leaving their cushy TT jobs And let me know when you do so I can keep my eye out for the job posting a year later

I wonder how many deeply held facts I have in my head are near-truth amalgams. I used to remember a quote in a specific book by a USAF pilot in the Vietnam War who said he would drop his bombs randomly because “bombs dropped” was the metric of effectiveness. Today I checked and could not find it!

Absolute travesty. Academic freedom simply does not exist at Texas Tech University.
After appealing my tenure denial the
Tenure Hearing Panel unanimously found that “the promotion & tenure process was ‘significantly noncompliant with the university’s established standards and procedures’. The President however upheld his original decision to deny me tenure.

I agree @coldwarhost.bsky.social. Plenty to disagree with on whether the Powell Doctrine is actually feasible, or if it was a specific instruction for a specific moment in time, but the essay by @kschake.bsky.social is thought-provoking and schematic in helpful ways.

"Made in Thailand" might mean textiles to most Americans, but that's about to mean something very different: it's the name of a major Thai defense industrial drive. But as I argued in @foreignpolicy.com "self-reliance" is a paradox. www.nationthailand.com/news/policy/...

How messed up was South Africa's Apartheid system? The navy began racial integration by the late 1970s, but was debarred from publicizing it because doing so violated regime policy.

I quite enjoyed reading Penny Von Eschen's PARADOXES OF NOSTALGIA when it came out. The H-Diplo roundtable review of the work is also excellent. I see a key question at the heart of the book: was nostalgia deadly for American foreign policy? The RT is worth reading. issforum.org/roundtables/...

Listening to NPR this morning, and I was touched by news of the ceremonies here in NYC honoring Staff Sgt. Angel Rampersad, who died in Jordan. American deaths overseas in this senseless war have brought the war home far more deeply than any rise in gas prices.

The United States lost the Iran war, most can agree on that. But what a lesson for how asymmetric warfare by a lesser power can resist a superior foe. If I am Taiwan, Vietnam, or the Baltic states, I would be taking notes.
