Check it, nerds. Recent find of late stage Maglemosian (8400 BP) antler axe with preserved wooden handle from Egholm, Northern Jutland. Fantastic to see that we still have conditions in Denmark for such fantastic organic preservation. Because it probably won’t be long before we don’t.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

Astronomy Picture of the Day Triple Shockwave from Sun Crossing Rocket Credit: John Winkopp for WAI media apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap26061... More amazing pics by J. Winkopp at www.spacecoastpictures.com 🧪🔭
A photography featuring the passage of a rocket in front of the Sun, capturing multiple shockwave structures.

Explanation: What's happening to this Sun-crossing rocket? The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, visible on the upper left, launched only about one minute before this amazing image was captured. As it rose to low Earth orbit from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA, in late May, the rocket became supersonic before it crossed the disk of the distant Sun -- from the perspective of the well-placed photographer. The spacecraft's high speed caused bow-shaped compressed-air shockwaves to form across leading surfaces, with at least three visible even outside the Sun's disk because they refract sunlight. The trailing exhaust caused turbulence visible on the lower right. None of this was damaging to the robotic Starlink 10-53 mission, which delivered 29 communications satellites to low Earth orbit as planned. And if that isn't amazing enough - the Sun had spots!

Today is #WorldOceansDay, so here's a graphic which looks at the ocean acidification caused by rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and how this affects the ocean habitat 🌊 www.compoundchem.com/2017/01/18/o... #ChemSky 🧪
An infographic titled "Carbon Dioxide and Ocean Acidification" from Compound Interest details how rising carbon dioxide levels lower ocean pH. The first section, "The Basics," shows ocean pH dropping from 8.2 (pre-industrial) to 8.1 (2013) and a projected 7.7 by 2100. "The Chemistry" section uses chemical equations to illustrate CO2 reacting with water to form carbonic acid, which dissociates into hydrogen, bicarbonate, and carbonate ions. "The Effects" outlines risks: decreased shell formation for calcifying organisms, disrupted food webs and fishing economies, and impaired animal chemical signaling.
