New research from Marra Country, NT, rethinks the “boundaries” of tula distribution — exploring how stone technologies moved, adapted and persisted across regions. Full article: Rethinking boundaries: Tulas on Marra Country and the northern reach of a Holocene innovation
Figure from an Australian Archaeology article showing examples of traditional tula typologies and tula slugs from Marra Country, Northern Territory. Twelve stone artefacts are arranged in four groups labelled (a) to (d), showing different shapes, colours and forms. The caption identifies examples from Yilbilinji and Wanjini sites and notes that the photographs were taken by Christina Skujins. The article title, “Rethinking boundaries: Tulas on Marra Country and the northern reach of a Holocene innovation”, and the authors’ names appear above the figure.

A lot of media coverage of the ‘AI’ reading of the Herculaneum scrolls really fails to understand what’s happened here. There’s no language processing happening, the AI/ML is not trained on a corpus of texts or language. It can detect ink to see shapes. HUMAN EXPERTS are then transcribing the text.
A screenshot from here: https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2025-02-07-inside-herculaneum-scroll-seen-first-time-almost-2000-years
