It’s amazing how the media cooperates to make some issues salient and completely ignores others. We went from North Carolina being protested against for an anti-trans bathroom bill in 2016 to now every politician being asked their position on a dozen or so athletes in ALL of K-16.

People working in abortion access & reproductive justice knew where we were headed, & we tried desperately to get anyone to care. Nobody cared. Now pregnant people are dying. That was the cost of ignoring this "single issue". Our lives. Our families. Much worse for Black & brown families.

Sarah apologized to us, because she could see exactly what was going on - and that in general folks were not standing up to protect abortion access and pregnant people. We knew what would happen. We already saw some of the impacts and clinics closed, and Crisis Pregnancy Centers took over.

Sarah Weddington, who was the lawyer in that case. Who everyone thought would lose. Everyone (lawyers and law aficionados) agreed that Roe was actually NOT GREAT in terms of it's legal underpinnings, and that we needed better from our State and Federal leaders to protect people who need abortions.

While I lived in Texas, we went from (many? 25? 20?) abortion clinics to.... 4. We fought every fucking step of the way. And every step, we encountered "allies" and Democrats who told us not to worry about it, because Roe V. Wade was on lock. Do you know who did not tell me that?

The resources I thought existed. The way I thought they supported so many people. It was a charade (and I know you know how this goes). It depended on race. On income. On marital status. Already, on the ground in Texas, getting an abortion was tricky. Not impossible, not illegal, but hard.

When we moved to Texas, in 2010, I pretty quickly tiptoed into the world of abortion funds and abortion access. I worked our hotline, then eventually joined our board. Whooo, was I in for an education. I thought I understand how reproductive rights existed in the US. I was... extremely naive.

my wife has a friend who sent Dolly Parton a painting she made & a letter explaining how much Dolly's music meant to her while she was transitioning. Dolly responded to it personally & paid for her top surgery. Sounds like an urban legend but it's real. I think we're going to more stories like this.

I'm sure she got advice on her image, on how it might be better to reject her LGBTQ audience. She didn't. She knew what it was to be powerless & poor & she didn't want *anyone* to live that way. I once got to stand in the same room as Dolly Parton while she told Asa Hutchinson that *everyone* is one of God's children in her eyes and that we should build tables big enough to accommodate every single human. She was my hero before I became a librarian, and she will be until I die.

As a native Tennesseean, Dolly’s passing hits hard. I went to Dollywood as a kid the first year it had her name on it. I’ve taken all my kids. She’s sent them all books. The last time I saw her at Dollywood I yelled “We love you, Dolly!” She turned around and said “I love you, too!”

The reason I've gone more left in recent years is that I previously accepted that we simply couldn't afford decent cheap housing, heavily subsidised transport, a universal basic income, etc. Then in 20 years in politics I saw what we actually could afford. And it's a lot. It's just never for you.
