Your regular reminder: If the Russians stop fighting, the war ends. If the Ukrainians stop fighting, their land will be occupied, their leaders will be killed, their history and language will be erased, their children will be kidnapped to serve Russia.

It never dawned on me that younger people would not understand how the passengers of United Airlines Flight 93 were able to call their loved one's mid-flight to say goodbye, until I saw a video explaining sky phones. They didn't know about sky phones.

Daily life on death row nearly robbed him of his sanity, Jimmie Duncan told @veritenews.org and ProPublica. Like all inmates awaiting execution, Duncan remained in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day — for more than 20 years.

23-hour solitary confinement. 115-degree heat. Jimmie Duncan is haunted by the decades he spent in Louisiana's Angola prison -- and how, even after being released, he still isn't truly free.

Please understand this. The legal appeal didn’t challenge the ample and undisputed evidence in the first trial that removing protected bike-lanes would significantly endanger lives, ADD to traffic conjunction, etc. The appeal decision simply concluded that Ford had the legal right to do all that.

Oliver Cussen · Doctor of the Incurable: Marat Unmade
Beyond the violence and immediacy of his language, perhaps Jean-Paul Marat was popular for a more straightforward reason...

Marat was a POS who got turned into a martyr. Sort of a murderous Charlie Kirk of the Terror, more murderous than Robespierre

There are many stories about men being murdered in the bath. Here's David's famous portrayal of the Death of Marat, famously stabbed to death in the bath by Charlotte Corday.

Cuchulain waits for seven years and obtains the apple. Blathnat then prepares a bath and ties her husband’s long hair to the bed, takes his sword and her lover cuts the apple in two. The husband loses his strength and cries out: ‘No secret to a woman, no jewel to slaves!’ Cuchulain cuts off his head

In the Cuchulain version of the story, Blathnat extracts from her husband King Curoi the secret that his soul is hidden in an apple in the stomach of a salmon which appears once every seven years in a spring on the side of the mountain Slieve Mis. This apple can be cut only with his own sword.

Robert Graves recounts numerous betrayals by women in The White Goddess: Gilgamesh's deception by Ishtar, Samson's deception by Delilah. In the Cuchulain version of the same story, Blodeuwedd is named Blathnat.

As a painter's subject he offers the chance to contrast the flesh and jewels of a beautiful, festively attired woman with the grisly head of the victim, a parallel to the sequence in the Hebrew Bible, as well as the New Testament vignette of Salome with the head of John the Baptist.

Holofernes is also depicted in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Monk's Tale in The Canterbury Tales, and in Dante's Purgatorio, in which Holofernes is to be found on the Terrace of Pride as an example of "pride cast down", XII.58–60.

I think people who claim using genAI makes them artists and people who tweet stolen jokes have the same mindset. They want praise for creating something other people actually created (be it one joke writer or a thousand artists) and get extremely defensive when their theft is pointed out to them.

To win a war means changing the politics of the enemy such that they must surrender. That is what Iran just did to the United States. See my latest essay: "Capitulation Day: The dimensions of defeat, and the chance for recovery." snyder.substack.com/p/capitulati...
Text card
Title: "Capitulation Day"
Text:
"This war was a parade of Trump’s incompetence at every possible level from the beginning. To win a war requires understanding the politics of the other side and how it might be changed. Trump, Hegseth and the others treated the Iranian leadership as cartoon characters who would immediately do what Americans wanted as soon as the bombs fell. The Americans had no strategy -- no sense of how violence could change politics -- and it did not occur to them that the Iranians would have one. Once the Iranians did the obvious, which was to respond to American long-range strikes with their own, and close the Straits of Hormuz, the war was over, and they had won. The Americans had no second move, except to claim that they had won when they had lost (which they are, laughably, still doing)."

Stop calling the leisured provincial gentry "working class"
About 25 miles southwest of Wiggins, Jim Miller was elbows-deep in the engine of his ailing Dodge pickup.
A 65-year-old retired commodities broker raised in the liberal city ‌of Boulder who now lives in tiny Prospect Valley, Miller considers himself “half-hippie, half-cowboy.”
He said enduring the momentary pain of high gas prices was worth preventing Iran from pursuing a nuclear weapon. In the unincorporated town of Roggen was Mike Urbanowicz, a 66-year-old trader with multiple college degrees whose farming cooperative moves 150 truckloads of grain each day.
He voted three times for Trump, but like many interviewed by Reuters, he considers himself a political independent, saying he distrusts the Republican Party nearly as much as their Democratic foes.
Gas prices were hurting his industry, he said, and Trump was “naive” to think he could quickly solve the issue. He expected prices would remain high into the fall, even if there was a breakthrough in stalled U.S.-Iran peace talks.
But he preferred the status quo to Democrats, whom he saw as moving towards "full-blown socialism."
"I voted for Trump because the alternative is so bad," he said.
