And the 'don't like book learnin' crowd is going to want to dismiss that, but of course a modern society runs on having engineers, accountants, doctors, scientists, *state departments* who treat the dry matter of their expertise with meticulous seriousness. It demands that approach!

As an aside, I think one of the essential skills being trained in college that the 'college is for training workers' paradigm devalues to its peril is the ability and willingness to treat dry, academic matters as serious and worth getting right, rather than dismissing them.

Higher Education is not just about training workers, but also about training citizen leaders and good citizenship in part means thinking that the details matter, that getting them right matters, because it impacts some of your fellow citizens. "It only matters if job" is poison to citizenship.

This is a profound misunderstanding of academic freedom. Unlike free speech academic freedom is based on the judgment of experts that some ideas are worthless and should not be represented in the academy. This has been the case since the invention of the idea of academic freedom.

My four favourite facts about the cockchafer beetle: 1. It's called a cockchafer beetle. 2. It’s also sometimes known as a “billywitch”. 3. It’s unusually loud and clumsy by beetle standards and bangs into lots of things when it flies into your house by mistake. 4. It looks like this, close up.
A cockchafer beetle, demonstrating its talent for multitasking by showing us its pad while also listening with great sympathy to our problems.

Lovely naturalistic relief of a Hoopoe and Ibis, carved by an Egyptian artisan some 4,500 years ago! Limestone wall relief from the 5th Dynasty mortuary temple of Userkaf at Saqqara. Egyptian Museum, Cairo 📷 by me #ReliefWednesday #Archaeology
My photo shows part of a limestone wall panel carved in bas relief from the Fifth Dynasty mortuary temple of king Userkaf at Saqqara, Old Kingdom, 2465-2458 BC. It shows a Hoopoe, a crested bird with black and white wing pattern, and an ibis, with long curved beak, amongst papyrus plants in the marshes of the river Nile. My photo was taken in 2022 at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Happy 3 year anniversary to this post
We recommend avoiding general and often dehumanizing "the" labels such as the poor, the mentally ill, the French, the disabled, the college-educated. Instead, use wording such as people with mental illnesses. And use these descriptions only when clearly relevant.
