I hate that this is the perfect description and there's no way I can provide enough context to be able to use it in a conversation outside of like four people. You had to Be There.

Horrifying and unnerving. DHS sent an administrative subpoena to Google for this retiree's records and even sent armed agents out to his house for the "offense" of writing the following completely anodyne email to a federal prosecutor using an email address he found via Google.
He had decided that the America he believed in would not make it if people like him didn’t speak up, so on a cool, rainy morning in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Jon, 67 and recently retired, marched up to his study and began to type.

He had just read about the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s case against an Afghan it was trying to deport. The immigrant, identified in The Washington Post’s Oct. 30 investigation as H, had begged federal officials to reconsider, telling them the Taliban would kill him if he was returned to Afghanistan.

“Unconscionable,” Jon thought as he found an email address online for the lead prosecutor, Joseph Dernbach, who was named in the story. Peering through metal-rimmed glasses, Jon opened Gmail on his computer monitor.

“Mr. Dernbach, don’t play Russian roulette with H’s life,” he wrote. “Err on the side of caution. There’s a reason the US government along with many other governments don’t recognise the Taliban. Apply principles of common sense and decency.”

That was it. In five minutes, Jon said, he finished the note, signed his first and last name, pressed send and hoped his plea would make a difference.

Good afternoon from downtown Chicago, where despite heavy snowfall, thousands have gathered for an anti-ICE/CBP demonstration in solidarity with the Twin Cities. More are still streaming in. Lt. Illinois Gov. Juliana Stratton just addressed the crowd, and called for ICE to be abolished.

jokes about the confederacy are always funny, but you gotta think about it in terms of "Supernatural lasted 5x longer than the Confederacy", which is absolutely hysterical

Nothing lasts forever, and that includes the Roman Empire.

The Fall of Rome-Scented Candle smells like cypress trees and red wine. Light it and watch the Roman forum melt into a puddle of wax while you quietly contemplate the impermanence of civilizations and/or candles.

Do you think individual Romans understood that their civilization was collapsing? Or did it happen so gradually that they were able to ignore the warning signs—international trade breaking down, the senate becoming a rubber stamp for the supreme leader, and political violence becoming expected during transfers of power?

It’s hard to say, because it’s impossible to imagine being in that kind of situation. In any event—hope you enjoy the candle!

really need folks to understand how close CDC came to a mass casualty event. i saw all the news photos and was still shocked when i saw the dozens of bullet holes across the windows of HQ offices—including some of senior agency leadership. it is truly a miracle more people weren’t hurt

I have a free Sunday with no plans so usually I like to get a little ambitious with CTA coffee explorations, but I was too tired from This Week so I decided to try and find something near my neighborhood that I hadn't been to. Got a tasty sandwich and a respectable spot on a park bench. Not baddddd

Only the 23-year-olds and fools try to navigate the Red and Brown lines on St Patrick's in Chicago, so I decided to bus it, but those were also full. Then a lost Ukrainian woman wanted to get on the Red line and I was like I can't let you do this alone. At that point? I gave myself over to the day.

Well rounded International Women's Day over here - went to a protest, had an extremely tasty latte and pistachio chocolate croissant, accidentally jumped the line for some chicken nuggs, got a shower curtain I've had my eye on for years for 50% off, and walked over 20,000 steps.

This was re-re-reskeeted onto my timeline without alt text, so I'm reskeeting the original image with it, because it was a ray of sunshine in these dark times. It's too long to transcribe in one skeet, so there will be two. #uspol
Screenshot of two social media posts from a platform I don't recognize, from the username "vaspider". This is the text of the first post (second transcription in next skeet; they're too long to combine):

1: So... I got a notification from the State Department at like 8 PM Pacific that my passport was approved, and I was quietly thankful and stunned be my legal gender in Oregon is listed as X, or undeclared, and that's what's on my passport. I'm pretty sure someone(s) worked late to get the X passports done today.

I was already really grateful to whoever in the Seattle Passport Office worked late to get these things processed on the last Friday before That Man gets back into office... and then I got a notification that my passport shipped at fucking midnight Pacific and whoever got that shit out the door so it couldn't be picked up on Monday and like, denied and shredded?

They're *my fucking hero*.

This point can't be stressed enough. The ups and downs of California's annual rain/snow totals haven't changed much—but every drought is now higher-impact, as the ever-warmer atmosphere parches the landscape more. Moreover, SoCal's wet seasons are shortening and dry seasons are lengthening.
