Svenosaurus @svenosaurus.bsky.social · 7hThis is thoughtful and I suppose entirely correct, but I’ve achieved the same or more mostly by not paying attention. The median age of my clothes is probably 15-20 years and I have 2 sweaters I’ve been wearing (a lot!) for over 40 years. 000

Svenosaurus @svenosaurus.bsky.social · 03/10/2026That’s true, but it’s orthogonal to the argument. Occupations may be a better indicator of how various individuals are doing, but the situation by industry shows more about the state of the economy. All job growth concentrated in one (famously non-cyclical) industry is not normal or good. 010
Svenosaurus @svenosaurus.bsky.social · 03/10/2026It pretty much doesn’t. The best other industries do is stagnating, or having an occasional isolated positive month. 000

Svenosaurus @svenosaurus.bsky.social · 25/09/2026It doesn’t and it does. Sure, most of the distribution of wealth is driven by asset prices, which don’t enter this picture at all, but at the same time corporate profits (a partial complement of LS) are the highest share of GDP in a bazillion years, which mainly helps those who are already rich. 040
Svenosaurus @svenosaurus.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Also, notably, the trend was global in the late 20th century, but U.S.-specific in the 21st. 000
Svenosaurus @svenosaurus.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I don’t know what everyone assumes, but we’re not dividing society into capital and labor, but looking at how much income each of those factors of production gets. For a long time economists thought that should be stable over time, and its continued trend is a puzzle and a problem. 100
Svenosaurus @svenosaurus.bsky.social · 25/09/2026It *is* a lot of stuff. Everyone’s favorite explanation always ends up explaining only a small piece. 010
Svenosaurus @svenosaurus.bsky.social · 25/09/2026That (and some other measurement issues) is certainly a significant part of it, but how does it explain the big drops after the GFC and (after publication ) the pandemic? Svenosaurus @svenosaurus.bsky.social · 18/09/2026“Prices in real terms” is not a meaningful concept. Your chart shows that the median new house price increased 17% less than consumption prices; you can’t say that it has fallen by 17%. 012
Svenosaurus @svenosaurus.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Who pays such rates? I bought a used car 3 months ago and got a 2% interest rate. To be fair, that was a deal offered for the specific model, but such deals are common and a rate around 5-6% should be easy to find if you have good credit. 000

Svenosaurus @svenosaurus.bsky.social · 18/09/2026For the record, I agree that U.S. has little to do with Syria and also that, to the extent we do, the deaths that the Baathist regimes would have caused if left alone need to be netted out. Svenosaurus @svenosaurus.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Arguably the Soviet regime was committing genocide long before Germany invaded, so this seems like a good benchmark for “you shouldn’t count the victims of pre-existing murderous regimes”, which is certainly applicable to CoW, but it’s a pretty specific criterion. 100
