But are most people right in Suharto’s case? I don’t know anything about SE Asia to have an informed opinion, but could Japanese occupation have caused subsequent leaders to be more murderous? Would Chinese and North Korean communists have ended up as murderous without it? Getting off-topic, but…

…I think those are legitimate questions in assessing damage. Also, German expansion was a pretty direct cause of post-WW2 East European suffering. Even the unusual clarity of the villain’s identity in WW2 may have contributed to the Allies’ subsequent confidence in being the good guys in all wars.

Well, nobody really argues it. It's silly. Suharto was promoted because of his willingness to work with Japan and military bona fides (which also allowed him access to Sukarno, another Japanese collaborator who he eventually usurped). In contrast, the US had very little to do with Syria.
