Anyone who has ever had a dog knows this look. It's the one they give you when they can tell something is wrong, and they have decided they are not leaving your side... This beautiful painting is called Fidelity, and it was made by British artist Briton Rivière in 1869.

🐴 Bronze Terret. #Horses in the Iron Age (c. 800 BCE–43 CE) were highly valued: they pulled chariots, carried people into battle, and played vital roles in travel, ceremony, and burial traditions. They were so important that people dressed them in fancy #metalwork like this terret.
A terret is part of a horse’s harness, which guides the reins to a charioteer. This example was made of cast copper alloy (bronze) around 50 BCE–75 CE and has inlays of red and blue glass. It is decorated in a swirling style known as ‘Celtic Art’. At a time when the Roman army dominated much of Europe, its bold non-Roman design may have expressed a strong local identity before the Roman invasion of Britain in 43 CE.

Want to see this terret in person? Visit our new display ‘Harnessing Power’ in the Ashmolean’s Conservation gallery on level -1.
