My first time here. Lake Shasta is looking a little low as summer winds down. California’s largest reservoir is currently at about 57% of capacity, with the waterline nearly 80 feet below full pool. That sounds dramatic, but late-summer drawdown is normal here.

One of the more unusual sights at Rae Lakes in Kings Canyon National Park is Painted Lady. This striking peak exposes older, darker igneous rocks alongside lighter granite, revealing some of the complex magmatic history that built the Sierra Nevada more than 100 million years ago.

On a very intense five-day hike through Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, I spotted this lovely California mountain kingsnake. Despite its striking red, black and white bands, it’s nonvenomous and harmless to humans. Story coming soon about the hike.
