This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

I love it when friends and acquaintances come over and drink herbal tea with me in my grandmother's shapely blue cups. We have crackers and cheese in her matching blue bowls. We while away an hour. It is magic.

Sidewalk bench in my small city, in front of the beautiful neon in the window of my favorite Mexican restaurant in town. One tree with bright yellow leaves but green ones close to the trunk. I had comments on various passersby. Comes down to: I am among them. I remember missing that so much.

Friends, perhaps you are taking a break from discourse about sexual violence. May you rest and breathe and move in other places, other ways, if you need to. If not, I found this thread to be both powerful and another way of creating more space to breathe and talk, think and be.

Went across the street to the cemetery and took a small walk in the rain. There's still a bench sheltered by cedars. Puddles on old tarmac under grass and moss. For the first time in years, I wandered past the joined gravestone of Thankful and Jonathan Hunt, killed together by a bolt of lightning.

I sat in the very back of a beautiful reading and discussion between Melissa Febos and Donika Kelly today. Cold air from the big doors of John M. Greene Hall on my neck. Their marriage was in the work, in the mix. I also saw the haircuts of many people I know and don't know from the back.

Walking home in the rain Sunday, I passed Historic Northampton and saw Bathsheba Hull carrying a basket walk into the barn, followed by someone holding an umbrella over her head. It was a glimpse of a play about a moment in this free Black woman's 18th century life when the town took her land.

We talk a lot about the importance of voting but in doing so, we romanticize it, and I've come to believe that's a mistake. It's not romantic, it's not glorious, it's not an expression of your ideals or your identity. It's selecting the best outcome for the most people. That's all it is. Do that.

My sister in the driver's seat on my recent trip to Kansas and Santa Fe. She drove a two lane highway from our childhood to I-25, the home highway of our formative years, and on up the high plains through mesas to the mountains and Santa Fe to celebrate our brother Don and his art.
A fat woman with short grey hair, sunglasses, a vibrant blue and lavender top with a fern pattern waves from the driver's seat with a Mona Lisa smile and her hand on the wheel. She's waving past water bottles and a passenger seat with a blue neck pillow on it to the missing passenger, me, her sister, taking the picture outside the car at a rest stop just outside of Santa Fe. The setting is present in the sharp New Mexican sunlight and scrubby, dry hill visible out the driver's window.
