The Long, Strange Journey Of 'Gung-Ho'
The word "gung-ho" used to mean "industrial cooperative." So, how did it come to describe that overeager middle-schooler taking high school math? On today's edition of Word Watch, we explore.

America's national parks are being quietly taken apart: mass layoffs, record budget cuts, monuments shrunk by millions of acres, protected land reopened to drilling. None of this is speculation. Ten sourced examples, one at a time. 🧪

I’m working on a book chapter about how referral norms in complex institutions leads to everyone being certain you should go somewhere else for help—which keeps help out of reach. Apparently that extends to locating a rabies vaccine. (And the first one is supposed to be the easy one to find!)

This made me so angry, and the banality with which it was done — and the way in which it was clear that the “appropriate” response was kind of to demure/suppress/just pretend it wasn’t happening and go on with the show — was so recognizable. The gall, and yet, so commonplace.

ICE is everywhere. In 2022, ICE made arrests in 30% of counties. In 2025, ICE made arrests in 62% of counties. We ask: Do ICE arrests spark political action? Theory and prior evidence suggest it should. We find that ICE activity mostly does not mobilize citizens.
