My grandfather Harry was also an insect researcher, and his speciality was butterflies. He had one of the largest butterfly collections in Finland, and while most were donated to museums when he died, my parents still have a small part of his collection at their home.

Just found my great grandfather's nearly 100 old thesis at our summer cottage. Rolf was an entomologist, and the title translated to "ON THE ECOLOGY AND DISTRIBUTION OF ARTHROPODS IN THE DRIFT SAND AREAS ALONG THE COASTS OF FINLAND".

Finally, after 8.5 years, this massive new farmhouse yeast paper is out! We've analyzed no less than 1760 yeast samples, and discovered that there is more farmhouse yeast than all known modern beer yeast put together. New results about contamination, too. www.garshol.priv.no/blog/440.html

We hope our findings provide insights into designing more robust yeast strains for industrial biotechnology and fermentation. Next, we are working on using machine learning to predict optimum strain combinations in different environments and testing applications for the hybrid strains.

While genetic diversity between parents can boost performance under certain stresses, increasing ploidy negatively affects growth in most cases. There is no one‑size‑fits‑all strategy for creating hybrids: the best breeding strategy depends on the environment you want the yeast to perform in.

Many hybrids grew better than one or even both of their parent strains, especially under ethanol and salt stress. We show that this “hybrid vigour” depends strongly on both the genetic background of the parents and the number of chromosome copies (ploidy) in the hybrid.

Kristoffer Krogerus @suregork.bsky.social · 27/03/2026
Uniquely, we created sets of hybrids between the same parent strains with variable ploidy levels (i.e. chromosome copy numbers). Using Cas9-aided mating-type changing we create hybrids without sporulation and full genome inheritance.

In our recent study, we created over 1000 intraspecific yeast hybrids by crossing genetically diverse strains and tested how well they grow under harsh industrial conditions such as high ethanol, salt, and organic acids. enviromicro-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Reminds me of my sister, whose name was misheard in Sweden even though she has a Swedish name. Lotta Krogerus was misheard as Gråta Grögerizch. I still to this day have her in my phone under that name. It must have been the Finnish-Swedish accent 😆

The aroma profile was also nice, however, they are phenolic off-flavour positive. The strains made a really nice wheat beer! 🍻

Because of their diastatic ability, they were actually very efficient at growing in and consuming all the beer wort sugars (e.g. maltotriose).

Since the chicha environment is quite similar to that found in beer (grain-derived starch), we wanted to test how well they would perform in beer.

Kristoffer Krogerus @suregork.bsky.social · 15/05/2025
The link between the chicha and 'Beer 2' strains still remains a mystery. Maybe yeast was brought back with European colonists?

Kristoffer Krogerus @suregork.bsky.social · 15/05/2025
The STA1 in the South American and European beer strains appear to be from a single gene fusion event, and we think it has likely occured in a South American strain.

The Ecuadorian chicha strains are genetically quite closely related to the 'French Guiana, human' population (though appear to form their own monophyletic sister group).
120
Kristoffer Krogerus @suregork.bsky.social · 15/05/2025
The three STA1+ chicha strains actually carried two copies of STA1, one on chromosome IV, one on chromosome X. In Beer 2 strains, STA1 has been found on II, IV and X.

Kristoffer Krogerus @suregork.bsky.social · 15/05/2025
STA1 codes an extracellular glucoamylase enzyme that has been associated with beer contaminant yeast ("S. diastaticus"). So far, STA1 has only been found among 'Beer 2'/'Mosaic beer' strains, and surprisingly strains in the 'French Guiana, human' population.

Together with Nils we then tested a few non-beer strains in wort fermentations. Focus on fermentation, desirable flavours, and off-flavours. We hope this can inspire and yield more diverse brewing strains to the industry 🍻

We finally traced it down to the peptone in the YPD plates, which recently switched to another brand. Switching to SC plates and also switching to another peptone brand solved the issue. Any know how the peptone could cause increased antibiotic sensitivity?

Kristoffer Krogerus @suregork.bsky.social · 31/01/2025
Has anyone ever notice peptone brand would influence antibiotic resistance in #yeast? We suddenly started having issues with our transformations with NAT and HYG selection (no colonies appearing with plasmids that have worked well before).
