I've been working some more on my Montana Lego topography model and even as someone who specializes in fine and tedious work this one is a little ridiculous, and I haven't even gotten to the tough parts.

Why do I keep making things? Because I really enjoy making things. It takes a lot of patience and practice to make good things, but that work and the process are often even more rewarding than the finished thing. Shortcuts to instant “creativity” aren’t ever going to replace the experience of making

Got almost done with a cute puzzle template and then had a panicked thought - what if giraffes don’t have knees??! (spoiler: they do, but they are weird knees)

I honestly love your style and especially embracing the duo-tone look on this, it has so much said without any dialogue, and I'm sure you'd rock a sci-fi comic 200%

Being a cartoonist sometimes implies taking time off your graphic novel just so you can draw something else for once. Retro sci-fi/cassette futurism, especially of the anime kind, is very nostalgic to me.
An illustration all in purples and yellows. A woman in mechanic attire is sitting inside a capsule-style bedroom, lit by the sun through a small window. She's having dumplings. The setting is retro sci-fi or cassette futurism, with lots of pipes and analog screens decorating the surroundings. The illustration is very cluttered visually.

Every so often I think about the crappy house I rented in West Denver in '02, solely because the address was 1420 Yates Street. The plumbing was super janky, but when you flushed the toilet it sounded almost exactly like the first two seconds of the orchestra stab of the ST:TNG theme. Good times.

Meanwhile in the Lego room, a small topographic model of Montana is underway and as I only work on it for a half-dozen hours each week, it will probably take some time to finish, but should be an interesting study to see if I actually want to make a larger version!

And to be clear, I understand and support the striking union workers at the convention center. I just think it is unfair to peg blame on the hardworking SPX folks who literally will go bankrupt and defunct if they moved the show
170
Chris Yates @superyates.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Oof, I really feel bad for the SPX organizers - they are stuck between a hard place & a harder place in this situation, which is a completely external issue beyond their control. It is mind-bogglingly complicated to put together a convention of this complexity on its own in the best of circumstances

A hand-drawn line drawing of Norway's Stetind Mountain, digitally painted in a blocky fashion like some crazy puzzlemaker is going to use this as a template to make yet more art.
