You don’t actually have to celebrate Christmas, you know. If you love it, great, but my family decided a few years ago that Christmas just stressed us out. So we stopped celebrating it. No tree. No gifts. (No debt. No stressful to-do list.) And it is one of the best things I’ve ever done.

Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.

1. I live in a Blue state, which means that the infrastructure protecting the Public Good is functional and maintained. If a storm threatens a tornado, sirens go off telling us to head to safety. These sirens are tested monthly. When flash floods are warned we get loud alerts on our phones.

My mother has been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer which has metastasized. It is bad news but there are treatment options so we’re feeling hopeful we’ve still got some quality time with her. But the purpose of this thread is to share things you SHOULD NOT SAY to people in the hospital.
