My great-grandmother lost 2 of her 3 children. Afterward she refused to live in the house her husband built for the family because it was too full of memories. I cannot imagine that level of grief.

Granted, my kids were teens when we made this decision. They were old enough to understand and agree. It would have been harder with younger kids. But it helped that when they were younger, we took small steps to ‘edit’ the holiday so it was more manageable. It can be done.

You don’t actually have to celebrate Christmas, you know. If you love it, great, but my family decided a few years ago that Christmas just stressed us out. So we stopped celebrating it. No tree. No gifts. (No debt. No stressful to-do list.) And it is one of the best things I’ve ever done.

Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.

1. I live in a Blue state, which means that the infrastructure protecting the Public Good is functional and maintained. If a storm threatens a tornado, sirens go off telling us to head to safety. These sirens are tested monthly. When flash floods are warned we get loud alerts on our phones.
