My one pet peeve with regards to international title discourse is when "Robotech" is conflated with its best-know, most exceptional constituent work. I don't really care if you say "Chojiku" or "Super Dimension", but at the very least, be specific: It's called "Southern Cross".

Slight counterpoint that there are dorks who call the Ohbayashi film Hausu or the tokusatsu show Supaidaman but I'm otherwise in agreement. If anything, we're losing the war with things like Pacific Rim making kaiju a loanword and anime licensors insisting on the JP titles for SEO.

Something nice about Robotech is the way it retained the soap operatic elements of SDF Macross in a fashion very atypical for English adaptations of anime at the time. It's adaptational and arguably flattens some elements - particularly through use of narration - but it's still rather striking.

This answer has piqued my interest; one of the strengths of the original anime was that it was scripted with heavy involvement from Nanase Ohkawa (a member of CLAMP), meaning the ways in which it deviated felt especially authentic. The courage to include original material is an admirable gamble.

Can fans of the series expect the new anime to follow the previous anime's story, the manga's story, or something entirely different?

MIURA: We based the story on the original manga while incorporating additional episodes that further enrich the audience's understanding of the original work.
