Anand is the best (and I'm doing an event with him at, yes, @cityartssf.bsky.social Thursday, for his new book Man in the Mirror). Couldn't agree more that cities are refuges or places of last resort for people kicked out of rural/suburban/pseudo-idyllic America.

Shoutout to the ~4-year-old girl riding backwards on her parent’s bike this morning near the Haight, trash-talking the driving of the cars behind them. “Oooohhh you didn’t use a bliiinkeeer!” Great energy and confidence at such a young age!

Doing & thinking about things we like, things that give us pleasure, is not optional in realistic trauma recovery-- it's so essential that we have to purposefully, consistently make time for it. Even if we have to start entirely in our head w/ what we imagine.

I would like to apologize to the longhaired guy I scoffed at during a pagan festival in ‘96 who told me “possessions are a burden”. I was young & was about to move from IN to CA w/ 2 suitcases, and didn’t realize how much crap I’d accumulate in 30 years. You were so right (& also a great kisser).

In case you were wondering what I look like these days, here’s me bringing home my new emotional support Monstera Thai Constellation plant, and the dozen roses I also bought for myself, on AC Transit this afternoon.
A woman wearing a black and straw hat, red sunglasses, a lavender N95 mask, a black t-shirt with a bright orange maple leaf decorated with tribal patterns sits on a bus. She is wearing a backpack and you can see the light turquoise strap with an enamel pin of a rocket ship. She is holding a bouquet of roses but you can only see the yellow plastic wrapping. The green stem of giant monstera plant dominates the right side of the picture and a leaf partially covers her face.

The sky this morning is so beautiful. The view from Berkeley looking west and then from Duboce Park, looking east.
A bright blue sky scattered with fluffy white clouds over a narrow strip of Berkeley city street, with trees and light posts and one bus underneath.
The sun peeks out from one of two trees in the foreground. Blue sky with fluffy white clouds stretches over a tree-filled cityscape in the background. An inviting green lawn contrasts nicely at the bottom of the scene.

I spent two days in Canada last week & the general vibe was noticeably more chill than in the US. Relieved my kid is going to college there; wish I could move there too. Canadians seem to operate at a level of kindness that I aspire to myself. Wouldn’t it be lovely to live among such sweet people?

Years ago I realized most of this, and I am definitely a better person for it. Re 3 & 4 think of it like a chorus: you can hold that note indefinitely in a chorus, as some people take a breath while others sustain the note. For the audience, it sounds constant, but individuals still get to breathe.

A chilling reminder that things are not normal or okay, seen on our way to dinner last night, on the corner of Woolsey and Telegraph in Berkeley. (Alt text widget not working for me so: A sidewalk with “ICE TOOK A NEIGHBOR HERE” written on it in white chalk)

The terrible UX design on this new $25 eyeshadow palette that I just bought is galling. I didn’t notice the “face pigment” mention, and the warning/ key once you open it is hard to read. Who uses those colors elsewhere on their face? Also, if you must do this, why are they scattered around??
A closed, square eyeshadow palette of sixteen colors, with writing in the cover, including small white print at the bottom that indicates that five of these are “face pigments”An open eyeshadow palette of sixteen colors, five of which have light blue lines around their corners; the five are not grouped together. In tiny blue print on the bottom right is a “key” that says “Face pigments not for eye”

Thought I’d been skipping leg day because it’s exhausting and makes it harder to run afterwards, but I’d forgotten how weirdly territorial people get about the leg machines at the gym. Too many flavors of butt-hurt to deal with at once, I’ll stick with curtsy squats and donkey kicks, thanks.

Let’s be really clear about this lettuce situation: it’s not just the destruction of public health tracking, it’s also years and years of ending regulations that would have prevented conditions causing outbreaks in the first place, combined with climate change that makes them more likely to happen.

I think one reason data center outrage is so pronounced is people spent decades recycling and composting and otherwise scrimping to offset energy use and protect clean water, and the second we hit an inflection point for cheap electricity the banking industry said we’re taking all of it, fuck you

Anyway, landlord drove two hours (from where he lives) and is outside our house trying to fix this himself. They fixed our street outflow pipe a few months ago and we think they messed up the grading near the house. Don’t get me started on my worry about mold; our place was already too damp.

The top two stories on Axios right now make kind of a funny juxtaposition. One is about how Johnson can’t avoid a shutdown without Democratic votes. Two is about how mad Dem reps are at their constituents for telling them to do something, when they’re in the minority and obviously can’t do anything.

Someone on Facebook asked advice for a coverup tattoo for a Gaiman quote (and fair enough!) and a tattoo artist got chatting and said they do so many HP coverups these days too. That made me very happy. Then they said: "I donate the money from hp coverups to trans advocacy groups" and I got happier.
